I visited the Syracuse University open house. The night before I met with people from the Daily Orange and met other students around campus. No one was raving about Newhouse. Every time I asked how Newhouse was the answer started with...Well... They said it was to theoretical or that the classes weren't challenging. I'm in magazine and when we had individual meetings one of the girls from Newhouse in my group just kept talking about how she has been trying to transfer all year. The professor had to leave our session early and I was just overall really disappointed with what I saw. Did I just have a bad visit or are people finding that this school that is so renown just isn't all it's cracked up to be?

You did not have a bad visit but I will tell you this. Those 2-3 or so people that you met does not reflect the whole Newhouse school or student body. Of course at every institution there will be students trying to leave but here at Newhouse, the majority of students are typically pleased to be there. After all, it is ranked among the top three journalism schools in the country.

I don’t really know much about the programs at Newhouse (I applied to Communication Design) but I’ve visited Syracuse and researched it extensively so I’ll give you my opinion -

Newhouse is definitely regarded as one of the best and most prestigious Communications programs in the country. It really is a strong program, and there is no doubt that you will get a great education. The alumni network is very strong and you will most likely have a leg up on the competition once you graduate, granted you work hard and make the most out of your experience. I think a lot of people get internships in NYC or go to work there after graduating.

I got the impression that at Syracuse the Newhouse kids are in the spotlight more since its the top program and its much harder to get into than some of the other SU majors.

Every time I mentioned to someone that I was considering SU they raved about what a great communications school it is.

You can’t really judge how your experience will be based on someone else’s, some people would be unhappy anywhere and everyone is different… you just need to figure out if Syracuse would be somewhere that you want to spend your next 4 years.

Oh Maltal! Haha, hey you probably met me at the DO (I was in the feature office if you are who I think you are…). The DO kids traditionally balk at Newhouse and a few profs balk right back. It’s a superiority complex. The DO is an independent newspaper. We make our own money and our own content and the university stays out of our hair. We get a little big for our britches, start thinking the DO is what matters and school is for people too afraid to jump in feet first, and then whine about the excellent education we’re getting. Not saying Newhouse is perfect, but it’s better than you might hear at the DO office. Very biased judge. Decide for yourself. Great that you stopped by, though. Hope we see you next fall!
