Is NHS President an Academic Honor?

Can I list this under both activities and honors? My school requires you to do a decent amount of things, so I think it's definitely an activity. However the honors part is a lot harder. I would say it's an honor since it shows that you're respected enought to be elected (you don't run for it, kids just vote for whoever they think deserves it).

For anyone who was gonna say why don't you fill up the spots with more impressive honors, I don't have any. I'm not in any EC's like track or debate that regularly give out medals and my school doesn't give out stuff like "student of the year" or "best in history" until graduation. Besides National Merit Commended and National Achievement SF, NHS Pres is all I have.

NHS president isnt an honor.....NHS is a joke.........heh

Seriously NHS is a club in most respects, it just has limited membership (not that its hard to get in). NHS kids do stuff, even if it isnt very much. It isnt an academic honor b/c it is a leadership position. You were not elected because you can count well, or read real fast; whatever the ballot said. If you were there is something seriously wrong with your school.

I think that it is an honor!

haha i'm an nhs president and i listed it as an honor, so i hope so! :)

Since my school's NHS does nothing, i put it as an honor.

i do a lil bit , so yea, honor

...so national honors society is a honor?... I always thought it was one of the club/activities!

it's both, and furthemore nhs is different at many schools, at our school it is REALLY hard to get into nhs, and this commitee thoroughly reviews your 6 page application and decides whether or not you're in. Also, we do a lot of things as a club as well, so yeah...nhs, at least for us, isn't a joke. I put nhs as both an honor and a club/activity.

We don't get elected to positions, but are appointed by a committee after they read a very long application that's supposed to be anonymous (but most teachers can tell who we are by our accomplishments and stuff). Academics has a lot to do with getting a good officer position, and it's definitely an honor.

Yeah, I think I'm definitely going to list it as an honor, thanks guys!

nope- if you put it there it'll look like ur trying to o hard.

So CareBear98, you are suggesting NOT to list NHS at all, along with other national honor societies?

I am not saying getting into NHS is hard, but you do have to meet certain criteria in order to be accepted. If one teacher says 'no' you don't get in. Although not hard to get accepted, they do take into consideration other factors besides your grades.

So, list it or not?

Speaking of "honors". If you are selected as the only one to represent your school at a district thing - is that an achievement, honor or activity?

P.S. District thing based on leadership & community service, NOT academics.

Thanks.

You should def list it on ur app just not as an honor- and elaborate on what you did as president, etc. For example at my school- its VERY hard to get into NHS...but the executive board is just a popularity contest. Don't list it as an honor where you cannot elaborate on it......but that into an essay or onto your resume w/ a sentence about why this was such a PERSONAL honor for you.

Same with my school. Being elected president of NHS is just a popularity contest at my school. The smartest person wins, not the most productive one!

"popularity contest "

Doesn't that make you feel honored?

it depends on how much your NHS does. ours organizes a few activities every year..so i would put it under activities..otherwise put it as an honor.

Ours also does some fund raising activities and dontates the money to the local children's hospital along with arranging induction ceremonies and receptions but compared to my involvement with my other activies, NHS is on the bottom on my list.

Along with being pres. of NHS, being a class officer is yet another popularity contest - at least at my school. And yes, adcoms are aware of this.

I think if someone is pres. of NHS it is great, if they DO something. Our NHS pres. is an introvert and not involved in any other clubs or sports. The perception is that she is smart (and she is); that is why she is pres.
