I'm not in it, but a lot of people in my school say "OMFG BBQ NHS IS SO AWESOME. COLLEGES WILL SEE IT AND SAY 'OH GOD HE/SHE HAS NHS LETS ACCEPT' and that only a few people can actually get into it.."

i can get into it probably, but I don't have time for it

and then these same people make fun of my clubs that i founded/or in

argh, sometimes, it makes me mad that pple just do stuff for college ._________.

lol, discuss

Nope. Boring, maybe useful if you want community service hours (which is kind of the point of it - for smart people to help the community - but nobody cares about that anymore), but not especially helpful otherwise.

At my school it is fail.

Like 30% of the grade can get in. Being in a club/founding a club is actually a lot more useful in college apps.

In short, no.

/thread

I hate people who start clubs just to get into college.

NHS = auto acceptance

Also, be an AP Scholar and get a full ride.

Not sure what you mean by is it really that good, but yeah, being on the NHS does usually give some brownie points depending on what college you’re at. Ivy League? Probably everyone was on it, but at a highly ranked non-Ivy (UChicago, Northeastern, etc.) it does show that you were dedicated to something, exspecially if you’re on the student council. Plus, the community service aspect of it is always a good thing. But also, it depends on how dedicated your school is. At mine, its a major thing, and only 3% of the school gets into it. Anyway, do what you can. If you don’t have time, stick with your other projects. Better to have one thing to write about on a college essay than 8 things you’ve streched yourself out to do.

NHS means nothing in any top 15 school.

Not even close. NHS people are a dime a dozen. Starving artist is a much more interesting EC than membership in such a society.

If you want, join NHS so you can hang with friends at random school functions. Other than that, just keep the grades, lead in activities, volunteer your heart out - in short, everything required for NHS membership - and show admissions officers that it was you who turned them down.

^Legit.
Save your app space for something more meaningful/prestigious.

NHS is just another thing to add to your application…No one really expects to get into Harvard just by being in NHS, but then again, not everyone has the opportunities to found random clubs

im in NHS just to look good for college, lol…30 minutes meeting once a month FTW

NHS is a nationally recognized organization----so it can’t hurt you.
The one in my school requires two events per semester, so approx 6 hours per sem, 12 hours in a year.

But note that NHS isn’t everything either. Whoever said NHS = guaranteed admission to college is BSing you.

Maybe being an officer might look nice, but really? Guaranteed admission? Absolutely not.

I’m NHS officer myself. When I look at certain members in my club, thinking that they’d get guaranteed admission to selective college is sickening.

The Nazi party is a nationally recognized organization.
You’re either president or you leave NHS.

should I put NHS on my application under activities? I honestly don’t think much of it, because I think they choose people by how nice they seem, but maybe it looks good(?)
