i know evanston has many good restaurants for vegetarians, but does anyone know if northwestern is veg friendly or not? is there a particular dining hall that is better for vegetarians than others? most college campuses aren't too veg friendly, so i'm hoping northwestern is. thanks for any advice you can give!

This ranking is probably not very scientific but PETA ranked us one of the top 10 most-vegetarian friendly colleges nationwide in its most recent ranking:

We’re pretty veg-friendly in any case. Allison is most veg-friendly, I’d say.

thanks for the advice. anyone else have anything to input?

Too friendly some would say, but I’ve not had to eat in the dining hall for almost a year now so my input may be outdated.

You have nothing to worry about. NU is so vegetarian/vegan friendly that some “non-veg” students complain that there isn’t enough “normal” food for people who eat meat!

Besides the abundance of fruits/vegetables/tofu for use in salads, there are usually a couple vegetarian and/or vegan main dishes at each meal. At Hinman (I can’t speak for the other dining halls) there is also a vegan soup as well as a vegan dessert at most, if not all meals.

So don’t worry, you’re covered. :)

Yup I’ve eaten at the campus many times and there are lots of good options!

As others have said there certainly are a lot of vegetarian/vegan options in the dining halls, and they always seem to have good variety (i.e. not the same boring entree every day).

The only other thing I would say is to be careful if you are extremely strict vegan. The so-called ‘vegan pancakes’ at Plex (at least in the past) have been made with a pre-made mix that included eggs – so do your due diligence.
