I'm getting a little bit concerned because the last I heard from NU was their confirmation e-mail sent after I submitted my app a couple of weeks before the Regular Decision date. I understand that they're notifying us of their decision in mid-April, but I haven't gotten ANYTHING from them in forever. No one contacted me regarding an interview, and I haven't even been asked to create an account of some sort. But they definitely have my e-mail correct because like I said, I did get a confirmation e-mail back when I submitted my app.

I am a student in Los Angeles, CA and I don't have amazing stats but they are decent. I'm a URM as well, and have a pretty impressive ECs and a moving essay.

So what I'm trying to ask is: is this normal? If I'm not asked for an interview, is it a bad sign? Was I supposed to set up the interview myself? A fellow student at my HS who is also applying to NU said he got an e-mail about interviews and was told to set it up himself (there were no available spots for him) but I never received an e-mail like this.

You have to schedule an interview (they’re useless so you shouldnt do them unless ur really compelled to). It’s normal. They don’t send anything to you until they review if all your app materials are in (2nd email). Then its the decision email (3rd email).

So 3 emails in the whole admissions process for me.

So Northwestern never sent you an e-mail even proposing the thought of an interview? I never got ANYTHING that even mentioned an interview. I wouldn’t have scheduled one anyway, but it seems weird that they didn’t tell me at all.

Also, when did you get an e-mail sent to you stating that all your materials were in?

Northwestern did send me an email reminding me to set up an interview on their website, and I got one that said they had received my materials, and another one saying my file was complete and under review. This was about 5 weeks after I sent in my RD materials.

To be honest, Northwestern did send me an email asking me to check their website and register for an interview. However, that could have been because the interview was with a group of alumni on a scheduled date from all Westchester/Fairfield County applicants, so I’m not sure if that is the same thing…

My S just got an e-mail letting him know everything was in, then he recieved his acceptance envelope at the end of March/beginning of April. Interviews are totally optional and do not count toward acceptance. My son never had an interview by the time he signed up they were not doing them anymore that year. I believe they are set up more for information for the applicant then to “interview” the applicant. So don’t worry you are not being ignored!

DS got the following email the first week in January:

The Northwestern University Alumni Admission Council is pleased to offer informational interviews, conducted by a local alumnus/a of the University, to Regular Decision applicants. Interviews are not required, however they can provide insight into life as a Northwestern student and are an excellent opportunity to have your questions answered. Information about registering for interviews in your area can be found online at [Welcome to the Northwestern University Alumni Admission Council Interview Site](http://interviews.ugadm.northwestern.edu).
Best regards,

Unfortunately, that link now states that interviews are no longer available.

I say email or call them to make sure they got your application and that it is complete.

Alumni interviews are always a complete waste of time. The schools use it as a way to keep the alumni thinking that their opinion matters and continue to contribute.

Different schools put different weights on interviews. Worst case it shows demonstrated interest and can give the applicant a clearer picture of the school. Best case it can push a borderline applicant over the top.

Take my word for it, all alumni interviews are a waste of time. It will not do anything for a borderline applicant. All it does it make the alumni feel important, as if their opinion matters. It doesn’t.
