Is NSHSS worth it?

Hi everyone -- this is my first time posting a new thread so bear with me and hopefully I've posted into the correct forum.

My question is, is it worth a rising high school junior registering with National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS - The National Society of High School Scholars - Inspiring youth to become a positive influence in the world)? I am asking this question professionally, and as a new high school counselor, this is my first interaction with this program.

I'm pretty sure there is a fee to join, and I wondered if anyone else on here might have any suggestions on whether or not this was a worthwhile program.

I apologize if there is a duplicate thread out there like this, again, I'm pretty new. Thanks!!

They way to find out if a question has been asked before, particularly when there is a good key word, is to use the Search function. Use the Search function on this or the Parents forum for ‘NSHSS’ and you will find plenty of past threads, including one from yesterday (their letters must have gone out this week ;)).

Think of it this way: Every time I see a NSHSS bumper sticker I laugh and feel terrible at the same time. There are virtually no standards to ‘get into’ the NSHSS and most people who pay to be in it legitimately think its a big deal.

Avoid it.

I got their letter last year and did a bit of research. Basically, their only admissions standard is a low-ish GPA cutoff (I think it was like 3.0), so it doesn’t really tell colleges anything that wouldn’t be found on a transcript. The organization behind NSHSS is a for-profit company and it’s generally regarded as a scam.

As a general rule, if you have to pay to get an “honor,” it’s probably not really any significant honor.

People on College Confidential say “scam” a lot, but I don’t think it is.

NSHSS promises that if you pay the money, they’ll put your name in a book, send you a bumper sticker that the 'rents can put on the Odyssey, and tell you about scholarships that you could probably find online yourself if you searched. And as far as I know, if you pay the money, they’ll put your name in the book and tell you about the scholarships. And, judging by the Odysseys I see around here, they definitely deliver on the bumper sticker.

So I don’t think it’s a scam, exactly. Just a poor value.
