Is NYU ED2 realistic for me

Hi! I really want to go to NYU Gallatin but I’m not sure how realistic it is for me. Please give me any thoughts you have.

I’m applying ED2 test optional.

I currently have a 3.75 UW and 4.68 W GPA (not including first semester senior year, my GPA will drop before I submit my app)

I have 6 AP classes
7 honors classes
5 Dual credit classes.

I am very involved in my EC’s. I have leadership positions in several state and national orgs.

I think my essays are okay (probably not amazing).

So here’s the biggest problem with my app:
I didn’t do amazing the first two years of high school. I had more A’s than B’s, but I got a 79 in honors chem. I thought I might be able to get away with this if I only got A’s for the remainder of high school. My Junior year, and first semester senior year, I have had all A’s with one exception. I got a 73 in Dual Credit English 4 because I had technology problems during the final (I’m taking all virtual classes this year). The college that I took the class through does not have any policies in place for this situation so unfortunately this will go on my transcript.

I feel like my chances of getting into NYU are really low because of this.

Is it worth applying? Do I have a shot?

You absolutely have a good shot, so I would apply. I had a D+ one marking period for IB Calc Applications and I’m in at NYU Shanghai. The “holistic approach” parroted by these AOs and others is absolutely true.

Your counselor can provide some support by addressing the technological issues in the recommendation letter. Your essay should be sharp, not just ok. NYU does have a holistic approach with the applications review.

Another emphasis for the holistic aspect at NYU. (My daughter got in with a 3.5 uw a couple of years ago while some of her high school classmates with noticeably better grades were rejected, although to be fair she had a decent ACT score for that cycle.) Your essays and recommendations will matter, so I agree with a poster above if you think your essays are just “ok”, work on them a bit more. For Gallatin, your “why NYU” should particularly show how you will use the flexibility offered by Gallatin to structure your degree to match your interests.

Hello! I was admitted to NYU gallatin ED1 with a bit higher stats than you. I can say confidently that my stats did not get me into the school. I thought my essays were pretty good and I made sure to make them as personal as possible! Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.

Can you please share your stats. My son is debating to apply for EDII and should he submit SAT score or not.

Sure! It depends for which school your son is applying to but I ended up not submitting a test score. I had scored a 1430 and for gallatin that apparently is a SAT good score, as most applicants that I’ve connected with did not even take the SAT/scored less than me. The mid 50 SAT at NYU is 1350-1530 but for whatever reason I thought it would hurt me. If your son has a score in this range it probably isn’t a bad idea to submit it. I had around a 3.9 GPA (but more realistically a 3.8) at a competitive high school and took 23 honors classes and 5 APs scoring a 5 on all the exams. NYU has a flexible testing policy where in a normal year 3 AP exam scores would suffice as a testing requirement so if your son has good AP scores he may not even need an SAT score. Good Luck!

Thank you so much. He applied for Stern EDII and has decent SAT score but not on 75 percentile, so he ended up not submitting and has perfect GPA, so let’s see.
