So my best friend got into NYU-Stern and Chicago. They are both excellent in undergraduate busines altough my friend is leaning towards NYU due the city factor.

However, her parents have some objections towards her going to NYU-Stern since they are afraid that if she decided to change major later on in her college career, some of the programs at NYU is not as good as Chicago.

So would it be possible for her to tranfer later on if somehow she decides business is not her thing? and is that theory valid at all?

from what ive heard, almost all of the programs at nyu are top notch. the only reason that maybe not a lot of people go for some of them (such as cas, steinhardt, social work) is because the majors they are pursuing are not as competitive as those in stern or tisch, so you could go to other schools. but im pretty sure all the programs are very good

All I know is that NYU has always attracted only the best and brightest. It's reputation is stellar. I grew up in the shadow of this giant in the West Village, and I can tell you that I have since lived in about 6 different places on this planet and the concensus is that NYU is one of the best universities in the world, especially for the arts. But come on, just look up what they do in research, in medicine and science. And of course the Stern is ANOTHER legend in the academic universe.

Hmm? NYU is without doubt a fine university, and its reputation is well received especially at an international level (at least in my country an NYU degree is considered to be just below an ivy-league degree in terms of prestige). But it being one of the best universities in the world? Maybe it will get there, especially with the endowment campaign currently in progress, but at the moment I do not believe that it has reached that level yet.

Y17k. In general, I agree with you that NYU Degree is slightly below an ivy in terms of prestige, although I have heard that 1) Stern Finance is amazing, second only to Wharton and 2) Tisch Film is the best in the country. It has no peer. Sorry if there are any other really top programs at NYU, but those are the 2 I'm currently aware of where it would probably be superior to quite a few, and in tisch's case, all, of the ivies.

Stern is another story, but many top schools do not have an undergraduate business school.
I was referring to NYU in general.
