For much of high school, NYU had been my first choice college. This year though I started hearing from many sources that NYU is overrated, does not give nearly as much fin aid as other schools, and is not worth the price tag. Even my guidance counselor and college advisor is discouraging me from going to NYU...

Can any of the current students or graduates please share your opinions about NYU?

Overrated in terms of what? Perhaps in some ways it may be "overrated", but I would actually say that NYU is academically very much under-rated.

And, yes, the financial aid is bad, but there are reasons for that.

the only people who think its overrated are the ones that were rejected and are sore losers

all they complain about is the lack of a "real campus" and school spirit, which in my opinion, is completely bogus

people who want to attend nyu all of a certain type...seems like most want to enjoy the city, not be walled inside like a pig pen, and even though nyu doesnt have sports teams...we buy nyu stuff like crazy so...forget those haters

NYU is in the heart of NYC! It has top-notch professors with beautiful buildings, and a world of resources at hand. How can NYU be overrated? It depends on how much your education is worth to you, in my eyes NYU is worth every penny.

If you want to do IR, why not go to top IR schools like Brown or Northwestern (or is it UChicago)?

I used to go to NYU, and I will say it's overrated. It's ranked similarly or worse than a lot of cheaper schools.

Many people I spoke with also wanted to transfer. Some did (you will notice NYU has a low retention rate, and that stat doesn't include those who transfer out of the university who are in GSP) , others stayed and let the aspects of the city grow on them. I couldn't wait to let my school grow, I wanted an instant match.

A lot of people get in because they don't need financial aid and that sucks because you have to share the caliber diploma with many people who don't belong there. And if you're getting into CAS first hand, that means eventually the GSP people will be in your pool with the same diploma.... That makes it pretty overrated, I would say...

(not to knock all of GSP, i know there are some weird circumstances where really smart and deserving people somehow land GSP)

also...where are the beautiful buildings?? I never saw them.

the campus sucks, and if you don't care about a lack of campus...i dunno, while grassy quads and chapels aren't a must, having to walk 20 minutes or having to take a 15 minute bus downtown every time you want to see your friends in another dorm...that made me want a campus

People think it's "overrated" because NYU has a huge reputation but ranks comparatively low on the usnews list of top colleges and because NYU isn't very selective with it's applicants compared to colleges with similar prestige. NYU also acts like the "lower" colleges by not offering very much financial aid while offering scholarships to top applicants.

However when it comes to prestige, being "overrated" is actually a good thing.
