Hey Guys,
I was wondering how the student body at NYU Stern and NYU in general is? I come from a regular middle class family (~170k income). Is NYU full of rich kids and students from households with income <250k are a minority? I feel I'd be alienated for not owning a beach house in the Hamptons, BMWs etc. Main reason I'm really considering UC Berkeley which has kids I could better relate to. If this isn't true, definitely choosing NYU because I love NYC :).
Thank you!

No I am going and I definitely don’t even have that class of an income.

hmm, nice choice imnotanoob! Im sure there are a good amount of kids not from wealthy backgrounds. Just curious, what proportion of kids at NYU take out loans or get scholarships to go to NYU? Are most people wealthy trust fund kids at NYU? I personally was lucky enough to get a merit scholarship at Stern or I would not have been able to afford to go. Just trying to see how many kids here are the trust fund snobby types. (Not sure I can get along well with them)

Apparently 61% of students attended with some financial aid in 2011-12.

I’m going to NYU this fall on scholarships and a few loans. My family has a ~40k income, so no, it’s not going to be entirely made up of “rich kids.”

What I don’t understand is why you’re worrying about this to the point that you’re considering another college, unless there are other reasons involved in that uncertainty… Why assume they’re all snobby? I’ve met a few lovely people who happen to be better off financially, and they never judged me for my parents’ income… Why limit your possible social circle or miss out on 4 years in a city you love based on relatability? I understand the preference toward those who relate to you, but don’t judge a book by its cover. Besides, I highly doubt that every student there has a beach house in the Hamptons…

lol, 170k is definitely not “regular middle class”. It’s AT LEAST upper middle class. 170k would actually place you in the top 7% in the US.

I’m deciding between UC Berkeley and NYU Stern too! (Message or @ me if you want to talk!) (Leaning very hard toward NYU) My family makes well less than half of what yours does. I got significant financial aid (still taking lots of loans) and I know a lot of Stern takes personal loans to pay for it. You won’t be alienated for not being able to afford absolutely everything, and in your position (and mine), taking part in most every activity you want to do is doable. I would assume the snobbiness stereotype of Stern kids is exaggerated.

I think Stern presents you with a lot of opportunities a lot of other schools do not. Good networking, great education, you are in the freaking city. Not everyone you meet is going to be extremely rich, and in my standards you are one of those people who is extremely rich as well. People are diverse, so you honestly will be fine.

hmm, yeah true thanks guys! Guess after doing so much research on Stern, and seeing how great it is, Im just putting weird reasons in my mind trying to convince myself it isnt a great choice even though it is amazing. Let me know if you guys need any help making your decisions with NYU! :)
