Hi, I got accepted into the Gallatin school and I'm really happy that i got accepted, but now looking at the cost, I'm not sure i can do it... My parents are willing to pay 40000, but that still leaves me with 20000 dollar in student loans right off the bat. I'm looking at scholarship websites to try and lower the amount of loans, but it's still going to be a lot to deal with. So i was wondering... Is NYU worth it? NYU is my dream school and I really want to go, but i'm afraid of all the student loans I might have to deal with later on and if NYU will prepare me to get a job that will help me pay it off... Can anyone help? thanks

You can’t take out 20,000 in loans. You can take only 27,000 in loans from the government over all 4 years. You would either need someone to cosign all of your loans or have your parents take out loans in their own names. Is that possible? Do your your parents have good enough credit?

Who would pay back those loans? You? Its stupid to have $80,000 worth of school loans.

What are you studying? I wouldn’t be as pessimistic as NYU2013 but whether your job is going to allow you to pay back those loans in a timely manner depends on your chosen career field.

Also, it’s easy to graduate in three years - that’d make it around $70,000 in loans if you factor in summer & winter classes (unless you have a lot of AP’s, of course, in which case it could cost you $60,000 in loans).

I’m looking to study acting, business and sociology and then trying to find something that incorporates that. I know this makes it more likely that it will be difficult to find a job where i’ll be able to pay my loans off quickly :/

Regardless of employment, it’s unwise to have $70,000 of debt. Go somewhere cheaper and transfer later if you think its nexessary

it’s not worth the debt to go to gallatin

why do you say that?

Not even Harvard is worth that much debt, so obviously any NYU school is not worth that much debt.

Harvard is DEFINITELY worth that kind of debt considering it is only like 4% interest deferred until six months after graduation. Gallatin may not be worth it though.

In a word, NO.

@drac313 maybe to an 18 year old who doesn’t understand money. But any financial advisor would tell you it’s literally stupid to take out that much debt. Taking out 100k for Harvard isn’t worth it.
