Is NYU worth it?

I was accepted to NYU for UG and would love to go there. But with the COA around 70k, the price is very hefty. It is by far the best school I was admitted to, with Florida State being the more affordable second choice. I visited NYU twice already and fell in love with the program and the idea of going to school there in the fall. But, I missed the FAFSA deadline for the first semester, so although I wouldn’t have to pay the full price (because of being a mil. dependent), I would still have to pay quite a lot with loans. On the other hand, Florida State would be around 5-10k for me, but it’s harder for me to envision myself there. I know the reputation it has for being a party school, and that’s not really the type of place I want to go.

If I did end up going to FSU, I’d want to go to NYU or a similar school for grad school with the money I saved because of going to FSU. Will it be easier for me to get into grad school in NYU because I was admitted UG? (I’m doubtful but hoping.)

All in all, I think I’d be fine with going to FSU for UG, but it would be very difficult for me to pass up an opportunity to go to NYU, especially because I don’t know if I would get a similar opportunity in the future. What courses of action would you suggest I take for the next 4+ years?

I work in IB in NYC. NYU’s reputation is not so strong here. Personally not worth the money. I’d take FSU just on pure cost savings.

No college is worth 70K my dude

Keep in mind that that 70K is an ESTIMATE that includes lots of things other than tuition though!

Your housing will be more than covered if you’re going on your parent’s GI Bill (at least I think that’s how that works, I’m a Navy vet and I’m going on my GI Bill). So that’s $17,580 you don’t have to worry about. Then you also get $1000 for your books and supplies. And I have no idea if you can participate in the Yellow Ribbon program but that will knock of $7000 for you at NYU.

They’ve also included stuff like transportation (an unlimited MTA pass is only $116/month. I have no idea why is says $1006 per semester when it’s only $1044 for the whole year on Albert) and misc things are in that estimate too which might not actually need to be so expensive.

I hope that helps!

@Awakening15 - the “transportation” estimate on college COAs is the cost for a student to travel from their home to the university for every term, break, etc. For a student living close by, this expense can be negligible. For a student traveling by air, the expense can be quite substantial.

@prospect2‌ Ah, that makes a lot more sense. Thank you
