Is NYU worth the debt?

I would 120k debt after I graduate from the College of Arts and Science? Is that even worth it? I've wanted to go here my entire life.

Definitely not. Think about how much your starting pay will, plus any loans for graduate work. It will be a nightmare to pay back. If NYU means that much to you, I would go to a cheap, but good in state school, save your money, have your parents save their money, and then spend the big bucks on NYU graduate school. If you do really well you may even get good funding.

Also, realize that most of those loans are not yours, they’re your parents’.

Traveler2be brings up a good alternative. To go to nyu for grad school. I always wondered how do you continue to grad school if you are 120k in debt from undergrad alone. I’m sure it can be done, but I just thought that 120k is close to the aggregate limits.

Anyhow also as far as debt is concerned what is worth it to you may not be to someone else and vice versa.

I would try to find a loan calculator and and see how much money you would need to make to pay off a 120k worth of loans. That might also help you decide.

with interest calculated in, my loan payments would be 1500k a month if I was on a 10 year plan. I plan to go to law school as well (I know people say that my direction in life will change at undergrad, but I’ve interned in many law-related offices inc. judges, attorney general of ny, nys senate, and I know I want to go in to law) so i have to keep that in consideration. ugh.

Well most people DO NOT do 10 year plans. At least a 20 year plan is recommended, which cuts your costs a lot (obviously not half, because of more interest).

Sidenote: I think it would help to hear from people who have gone to NYU and actually accumulated this much debt, as opposed to people with 0 debt. Its a different perspective.
