I know, yet another "where should I go" thread, but I'm going crazy here!

So I just got back from my NYU/NYC visit (loved it!) and have narrowed down my choices between NYU and UW Madison. I received a chancellors scholarship at Madison and can go there for free while NYU is giving me a $15,000 trustee scholarship (plus loans and work study) meaning it would cost me around $30,000 to go there each year (household income ~ $80,000). NYU and Madison both offer great academics (consequently they are ranked equally by US News I believe). On the other hand, NYU is clearly the better school if I decide to pursuer a career relating to theater design/architecture, and New York is definitely more exciting then Wisconsin (I'm from Minnesota). So that's basically it. Any comments? suggestions?

im gonna say that unless you are completely positive about your major... that madison is FINANCIALLY the better option...however... finance is only one part of the equation.

I'm probably turning down a full ride at Alabama to go to NYU (with a $25k CAS something-or-other scholarship). I'll have to go into debt, but it'll be on the level of a new car instead of a new house. Also, my parents are letting me get the loan from them (they pay out of pocket and I pay them back eventually) so it'll be interest-free. I'm pretty excited about it.

However, the difference between Alabama and NYU > the difference between Wisconsin and NYU. Plus, your financial situation is much more extreme than mine. If I was in your situation, I'd probably go to UW.

Last year my S was faced with a similar choice, NYU v. UW, and opted for UW. We live in the far west so either school was going to be a new experience to him. After visiting both schools he realized that he wanted to attend a big university. It took only three weeks in Madison to validate his premonition. In fact, he loved it so much that he tried to convince all of his friends to attend. That of course is just one person's experience, but according to him, "everyone he knows, loves it".
Both are excellent schools. Of course, NYU is significantly more expensive, which in his case was a consideration, but not a determining one.
Ultimately, he decided that if he still wants to attend school in NYC, he will try to do so for grad. school.
