Is NYU your dream school?

I came across this thread and just have to post. It seems that the rebuttal here is totally out of context. A "dream" school should be totally dependent on your major. If for example you were pursuing a degree in Broadcast Journalism, University of Missouri- Columbia (Ranked overall #88 by US News) would be on a list of your dream schools as it is one of the top Broadcast Journalism schools in the world. Northwestern, NYU and Syracuse would also be on the list. NONE of the Ivies would be on the list as none of them have accredited J schools. (Yale and Columbia have excellent J schools but only for MBAs).

Likewise for other majors - Musical Theatre the list would include Univ of Michigan, NYU, Carnegie. What is a "dream" school will differ depending on your major and doesn't follow the academic overview of US News. It depends on the faculty and department at a school where you want to pursue a certain craft. A dream school can also be subjective - urban v rural, large v small.

No offense, but I see what xanthom is saying. NYU is not everyone's dream school. And not dreams are what they are cracked up to be. (I'm not saying that this is true about NYU, but just in general about a lot of people's expectations of what college will be like.)

There is a decent amount of people out there who applied to NYU as their saftey school, yet ended up there in the end. This is true for almost all schools, including the really good ones.

NYU may be the overall dream school for all college applicants, but it isn't everyone's dream. I agree that NYU is a relatively more realistic dream for most people (versus the HYPS's).

In short, NYU is a great school in it's own right, but it's not for everyone.

xanthom, I'm curious, what college are you in at NYU?

NYU = Life.

lol

NYU mainstream? More like NY mainstream. newyorkhopeful, you are very right about sex and the city syndrome. Seems like the girls have that and the guys who apply to NYU seem to have indie-rock hipster syndrome. It's what's destroying NY. I think a lot of "average-achievers" apply to NYU for all the wrong reasons. I guess they want to just be in NY and enjoy the night life - which you really can't because you're underage! I applied to NYU this year because I would have so many freaking intern and job opportunities. Sadly, I got in but I can't afford it.

To be honest it actually WAS my dream school back in september, I even kicked myself for not applying ED because I thought my chances were shot with a C in AP Calculus BC and mediocre test scores. Yet I got in, with no aid as expected, and now it's looking like my more realistic school choice. I even went to NYC today and bought an NYU hoodie, just to prepare for the inevitable, heh. It was pretty nice walking around washington sq, it was a little chilly but other than that it refreshed my idea of the city itself.

I applied to Tufts but there is no way they are going to accept me with 2 C's in ap calculus bc, which I am really fine with =] I'm happy with NYU.

It seems that paying for NYU is a bigger challenge than getting in. It's been my dream to go since freshman year of high school, and everything I did was to build up a good resume to get in. Now that I'm admitted, the cost is what's discouraging me from attending. I'm supposed to get all $52,000ish in loans (and I live in CA so I have to pay even more for travelling expenses). It's pretty devastating that I'm going to have to turn down such a great opportunity at Gallatin, and all the job/internship opportunities in NYC...which meant so much to me since I want to live in NYC after college anyway and getting a job before I graduate would give me a head start. I admit I'm not one of the top academic achievers at my school, but I work hard and am passionate about the activites I've dedicated so much time to (music performance, photography, etc). I feel as if many of the people who want to go to NYU are really passionate about the things they do and I think that's why NYU is so alluring...it's a place where people of different interests and talents can meet and work together. I was really hoping I could go there and meet people to start a band, have cool photo shoots with, or start other neat projects with, but I guess that won't be happening.
if you don’t like it, why did you bother to even apply?
Hmmm … I don’t think Xanthom necessarily stated that he realized all potential negatives of this school prior to applying, which is understandable, since particular potential negatives may possibly only be realistically realizable upon sufficient attendance of the school after acceptance.

I certainly didn’t.

I knew about the overpriced, high tuition back then, for sure, but did not (for instance) expect it to rise, and did not expect many of the other negatives that I learned only upon attending the school. The education is definitely not as great as many people crack it up to be – I know many students from Stern and Tisch (supposedly very good undergraduate schools) who made many sound, significant complaints about their schools with regards to education and other factors. And in addition to the tuition, the school tries to steal as much money as they can from you. I’m not even talking about financial aid here – everything they do is in some way related to this evil corporation’s greed (… not needs, but greed).

Initially, I did not find this school so bad, but after a few months, I started to see the school’s true colors (purple) and am starting to see what these colors mean (purple = NYU is a ■■■).

I really hate this school. You can like it if you want; soon enough you’ll discover that it’s your loss.

oh noes, NYU just has to be gay! no, it’s not because there used to be violets in Washington Square Park! we have to revert to bashing gay people~!

honestly, i thought you had valid opinions until that point. really?

yes, NYU has it’s problems. it’s financial aid is terrible and it’s not this entirely perfect and awesome school. i’m a big fan of NYU, but in the end, it has it’s own problems. it’s not a dream school for everyone, but it’s my dream school and that’s all that matters to me.

and LOL to whoever said NYU was destroying NY. every year there’s something else ~destroying~ what NY used to be. one year it was sex and the city, the next it was hipsters, the next it was all the young parents in Park Slope. what’s it going to be this year? hipster parents?

i mean, honestly.

@schiesser

Honestly, I thought you were from TBNYU! until you pulled out that derogatory, homophobic term. I don’t really understand how you were oblivious enough to not realize that there is a sizable LGBT population at NYU. Did you even visit the school before deciding to attend? Or did you just rely on the “rankings” you now mock?

Also, tuition ALWAYS rises. It’s been rising at an alarming rate at almost every college in the country; just because some state school kids pay less than you doesn’t mean that their 5% increase doesn’t hurt just as much as yours. This trend has been covered in the mainstream media for at least a decade, yet you’re only wise to it now?

Finally, why didn’t you just transfer out if you hate it so much?

Columbia and NYU were both my dreams schools but in the end NYU worked out and Columbia didn’t. From the very beginning I knew I wanted to go to school in NYC and I made sure that even if I didn’t get into either NYU or Columbia NYC would still be an option so I even applied to Fordham just for added security. hey 2/3 isn’t bad right?

@schiesser I’m surprised you even got into college.

I definitely think NYU would be a dream school, especially if you are looking into getting your foot in investment banking. So, I guess I really want to get in lol

lol hey NYU’s CAS is pretty darn good too. I cant find its ranking anywhere, but a 24% acceptance rate is pretty tough.

people who say they apply to NYU just for city life are wrong. if you only cared about CITY LIFE then you would apply to ANY school in NYC, not specifically NYU.

stern is up there in like the top 10 undergrad biz schools and NYU produces the most academy award winners (or some award) out of any other school.

Seriously, get up to date on ur facts people. dont insult the school by saying you will “settle” for it. It’s a great place to be and learn; if you do nto think so, you obviously do not know it at all.

Nuff said.

I know people who turned down ivies and top 20s for CAS.

I also know students who have turned down ivies and top 20s for Stern, Tisch and Gallatin.

Hmm… I am beginning to notice a pattern here.

NYU Stern has been my #1 choice since sophomore year and I have really wanted to go there ever since…cant wait to apply next year!!

NYU wouldn’t be my dream school, because yes, Columbia exists. I applied for both and only got NYU Stern. I’d actually prefer a more academic environment. Maybe I could try transferring.

How is NYU not academic?

Barring a few specific schools across the U.S. that are unbelievably hard to get into no matter how high one’s stats are, NOBODY BEATS COURANT!

bloggergirl, why would you have applied to business school if you wanted an academic environment?

I would prefer an academic environment, but business school is fine.

But then, why not apply to CAS? That’s infinitely more academic than Stern, which, when compared to Columbia College (not including SEAS), is like comparing apples and oranges. Comparing CAS and Columbia College is a much fairer comparison in terms of how academic the environment may be.
