I’m taking the SSAT next month, and I’ve been having a hard time on analogies and math in general. Is there enough time for me to study to get at least an 80th percentile? And if yes, do you have any good studying strategies?
Well, (and I have personal experience since I have taken it twice and will be taking it again later this year,)- it depends on how much you already know. Have you taken any practice tests? What have you gotten on those tests?
Basically, if you motivate yourself, you should be able to do well next month!
As for studying strategies, my english tutor suggests the book “Direct Hits Core Vocabulary of the SAT” (I know it’s an SAT book, but it should still help you with the SSAT as they are very similar".
As for math, the usual SSAT textbook should be okay. There’s also a lot of studying strategies inside the book. If you can’t afford a book, most libraries have a bunch you can borrow.
Feel free to PM me about the SSAT or admissions in general, if you need it. I’d be glad to help.
Look on quizlet for SSAT lists. Some time working the lists can increase your vocabulary.
It depends on where you are now. I would suggest taking a practice one and studying extra in the weaker areas, but still study in every area. I agree with going to quizlet for vocab and just practicing some of the cards every day like in the mornings before school (on the bus, in the car, etc.) Feel free to PM me for any further questions.
I would say that one month is totally enough time. The first time I found out I was taking the SSAT was three days before the test. Just remember to go with your gut, because chances are you’re making an ‘educated’ guess.
Take as many practice tests you can!! Also look for apps to help you practice vocab… Good luck!
One month is enough time.
Get a prep book or two and review/relearn things you are unfamiliar with.
Don’t take a ton of practice tests–usually 2 or 3 is enough.
One month is plenty of time. I happen to be a horrid procrastinator and only studied once a week or so for an hourish. The math portion is alright it’s pretty much basic geometry and algebra. The vocabulary is okay if you’re strong with Greek and Latin. I’d say the hardest part is the reading. Def try practice tests for that! I did okay on it by studying little by little.
Depending on where you are in terms of the knowledge covered in the test, and your goals. A month is enough for you to take some sample tests and get familiar with the test format but is not enough to catch up on deficiencies in knowledge areas if you have any. An 80% shouldn’t be too hard to achieve if you are a solid student in a decent school.
Thank you everybody who answered, I feel better now. Hope I get at least an 80!
Both my kids did NOT study at all. Both of them just took a pratice test to familiarize themselves with the format. They both did fine.
