Do schools of similar caliber tend to admit and reject the same students?
After all, they receive the same application (disregarding school specific essays).

In my case, I was just waitlisted at Washington University in St. Louis.
The schools I'm still waiting on are: University of Chicago (deferred EA), Northwestern, Carleton, Macalester, Swarthmore, Vassar, Middlebury, and Wesleyan.

I have a 31 ACT and a 3.99 unweighted GPA. I knew going into this that all of these schools are highly selective and that admissions are a crapshoot. Especially considering my ACT.

(Of course, I did apply to and get into two other schools. Both of which I'd be pleased to attend.)

My question now, is how much does my recent waitlisting indicate what's to come? Do schools truly look for different subjective qualities? Can I bet on 8 rejections later this March?

Did you apply to a safety?

Different people see different things. That’s why some people will get into harvard, and not stanford, for example. So no, you can’t bet on 8 rejections this march. I don’t think your recent waitlisting indicates much. Goodluck!

if you have a spare moment, chance me?

DrGoogle, I wouldn’t really call them safeties but I’ve been accepted at Tulane and UW Madison. So if worst comes to worst, I’ll still have two really great schools to choose between.

FullOfWonder, this is true, I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed!

Not necessarily. I’ve gotten likely letters from Columbia and Dartmouth got got deferred at Yale and waitlist at wustl. Okay, perhaps they’re not the same caliber, but still. Every school has different things they may look for. What one school may not like another will love. It all depends on what they’re looking for that year and other things

Apparently WUSTL is known for waitlisting a large portion of its qualified applicants in order to gauge interest and protect yield. They want to admit students who they are quite sure will attend. Showing a lot of interest may boost your chances of getting in!

lolToasty, wow! Congrats! That’s actually really nice to hear- gives me some hope haha.
Are you a recruited athlete though?

JustSmile, yeah I’ve actually heard that too. Both the people I know have visited multiple times.

I’m really anxious to hear from the others now! Just 19 days maximum!
