Is Out Of State UCLA worth the cost?

So I’ve been admitted to UCLA, and my plan is to do bioinformatics/computational bio stuff, meaning a double major in bio and comp sci. Wahoo!

However… I’m also from Maryland, and the cost is pretty damn intimidating. Is there any reason why I should choose UCLA over UMD or UVA (move to va)?

absolutely no reason to pay OOS fees if you can attend another fine public at lower cost. But if you go to UCLA anyway, let me thank you on behalf of the CA taxpayers for your $100K contribution to the UC system.

More like 200k…

Thanks for your opinion though. So you are saying that UCLA’s fancy courses and “opportunities” aren’t too much compared to say UVA and the (for 3 years at least) lower cost?

Well let me preface by saying between UVA and UCLA, it is not worth the cost in my humble opinion. If you have money in your wallet to spend, you may choose UCLA because of all these reasons (I do not say they are necessarily $200K worth of reasons, however) …

Because you state that you’re intimidated by the cost, the money isn’t chump change to u. So UCLA is a NO.

Living in VA as a student, isn’t going to qualify u for in-state tuition rates.

I really want to know how in state tuition works then… Doesn’t living in the state mean… that you get in state tuition?

@ElPsyCongroo‌ - other than some neighboring state arrangements (KS & MO perhaps), going to school out of state does NOT result in you getting in-state tuition after a year or two. Here in CA, you can generally expect to pay 4 years of OOS unless your parents were to move to CA and file taxes as residents.

@arc918‌ My parents are willing to do that for VA. Then it should work right?

I only know the CA rules. With the proximity of all the states to one another in your area, I’m not sure exactly how the rules work. I’d the check the UVA website very carefully to be sure. Good luck!
