<p>So I have a second interview with a mining company for a mechanical engineer internship. It is onsite and will probably be a very intensive interview, since the secretary said the actual interview should last at least 1 hour.</p>
<p>I was planning on wearing a suit or at least everything minus a jacket, but now i'm having second thoughts. </p>
<p>I told my father about my interview, and he told me not to wear a suit. He says that the place is dusty, and that I am simply overdressing. He says that wearing a suit will project the wrong image and that he wouldn't hire me if I wore a suit. He thinks that a suit is ok for on campus interviews, but for an onsite interview I should wear something more appropriate. My dad owns his own steel detailing company, and has worked in mining companies and many other engineering places before so he has experience.</p>
<p>At first I just blew off his advice, but considering his experience as an engineer, I'm starting to listen to it.</p>
<p>Please knock some sense into me, and tell me my dad is wrong.</p>
<p>Why not just call the HR person and ask what to wear? Your reasoning could be "well, i don't know if you'd take me out in the field, making my stuff dirty".</p>
<p>you should ask the HR person. I interviewed with a cement company once onsite, and the HR person specifically reminded me a few times not to wear a suit, but dress casual, like in jeans and sweatshirts. </p>
<p>It made sense since after getting there, I realized how dirty everything is, and how ridiculously out of place I would have looked walking around the plant with a white shirt and dress shoes. This reality check sort of made me change my mind about engineering, might do the same for you.</p>
