If you were to grade Penn's environment, what would you give it?
What's Penn really like (in terms of local atmosphere, safety and security...etc.)?

Thanks.

erm, i dont go to penn, but i ve done much community service on the Penn Campus. The area is pretty clean and safe. Recently, there have been robbories by gangs made by 13year olds. But i think Penn's security has been tight recently. So its safe.

A+++ compared to the rest of Philly.

I'd say B+ overall. You're certainly no less safe at Penn than you are at Yale, UChicago, Columbia, etc...

I'd say B- ...not unsafe, but you need to be aware at all times. Yes, university city is much, much safer than North Philly, but that's not saying much. Be careful, be smart and you'll be OK.

It's also much, much safer than it was a decade ago.

Gentrification is our best weapon in fighting the west philly insurgency

"Killadelphia"

...

Self defense training is required as part of New Student Orientation and all incoming freshmen receive standard issue flak jackets. I never go outside without mine.

I assume you're being sarcastic?

can you imagine someone actually handing out body armor at orientation? that would amazing. no, they stick with the library social t-shirts.

Philly's a big city. If you want trouble, you can go looking for it. Don't go out at night alone, that's my only advice.

west philly insurgency!

I'm starting at penn this year, and already recieved the Penn issued handgun, you know, in case things get rough I suppose. I hear we're getting a choice of either a blackjack or a dagger ( medieval style) at NSO.

It's okay, young noobs. You will gain a sense of humor soon enough ;)

Are there any prerequisites for these choices?

Students receiving a 5 in AP Ninjanomics may choose the dagger. Other students wishing to receive the dagger must attend the dagger proseminar or complete the summer's Penn Violence Project.

Piece of cake!

I'm going with the dagger fo shou!! medieval styling fuullss!

I was in W. Phila last night at 30th St. Station. It was no more than 30 secs. after I parked before a beggar approached my car. Later, I passed at least 2 scenes w/ mucho cop cars and cops swarming around, perp in handcuffs, etc. So there definitely is stuff going on in Phila that you just don't see in the typical leafy suburb.

Now anecdotes are not proof, but I have the feeling that it has gotten a little worse and more out of control lately and the stats seem to support that. Hopefully Nutter (the presumed winner of the upcoming mayoral election) will do something to swing the #'s back down again somewhat but Phila. will never be like back home in Podunk, Iowa where you leave your house unlocked and your car windows open. You should be relatively safe at Penn but you have to exercise common sense. You don't need to pack heat as the others joked about, but on the other hand you are not surrounded by some invisible force field by virtue of your status as a Penn student either. No matter how many Penn cops and cameras there are, they cannot be everywhere. So a 3AM trip alone to the bank machine on Walnut may not be the best idea.

But, as others have said, Penn is not notably worse than any other urban campus, and there is no perfect safety anywhere, even in bucolic settings like Va. Tech. The chances are extremely good you'll emerge from W. Phila. alive in 4 years. I make no such promises about your laptop unless you keep your eyes on it at all times. The crime problem is certainly no added bonus for Penn but it should not prevent you from coming there if it is otherwise your top choice.

Actually, the only reported laptop theft I heard about last year was that idiot girl who left it unattended in 1920 Commons through all of winter break.

that sort of makes you wonder how in the world she managed to get into penn..I guess common sense isn't really a requirement for college nowadays.

nursing?
