I've been thinking of applying to Pitzer for a while now, but I'm unsure if I would want to go there / if I would fit in. I'm quite interested in environmental issues (which I know is one of Pitzer's focuses), but I'm also very business-oriented (I plan to start my own environmental tech business one day). I do love to learn about just about everything and would value a solid liberal arts education as well. However, my impression of Pitzer from one of the Claremont Colleges Receptions was that it was more oriented around solving social issues.
Basically I just want to know if Pitzer could give me the solid Econ education I would need to start a business, or if a Pitzer education would be too centered around social problems for me.

I think you’re overthinking it way too much. Any decent college will give you a centered academic econ background, that part should be the least of your concerns. What you should look into however, is how a college will fit you and your specific goals. From what i heard econ is a popular major at pitzer and your ability supplement your learning from classes at pomona and cmc makes the education even stronger. now what seems to make pitzer an ideal choice for you is, like you mentioned, pitzer’s attention towards enivronmental issues and your interest in them.
Its great that your buisness oriented, you will find people like you both at pitzer and the 5cs. While social issues are definately played up with admissions officers, i doubt first of all that it’s a bad thing to be educated on them and second not every single student has their mind only geared towards these issues and concerned about absolutely nothing else (what you kinda seem to be suggesting).
Best thing is to visit!

I agree with the over thinking comment. Pitzer is diverse with academics, students and causes. I was an Economics major and found it a great fit. I later picked up my MBA and CFA. I was not liberal and found the school ideal for exploring new perspectives while getting a superb education. I found the Econ program solid. Keep in mind they don’t have business degrees, but you can take those courses at CMC or Claremont Graduate School - Pitzer also has a combined BA/MBA that is five year with Drucker MBA at CGS.
