A couple of my cousins say they play poker like every weekend...is that the same for a lot of other colleges?

I very much hope so...

It was 2 or 3 years ago during the fad. Poker is kind of a cult thing again on campus.

Just wait till you make it your main income and it drives your mind insane :)

Sitting around a table for hours on end playing a monetarily zero-sum game never really appealed to me.

It's big enough. I never had trouble finding a game.

It's just another way of getting together with some friends, having a few drinks, maybe some cigars if you like, and possibly making money in the process. Sounds pretty appealing to me...

I play online poker, I'm up to the point where I can play two games at once. I generally make about 60-200 dollars each game. My friend makes 2000 dollars everyday, he plays 4 at a time.

I grew up in a family of professional players, my grandpa eats lunch with Tom McEvoy.. I know your friend doesn't make 2000 every day, and if you don't know about the swings of the game you have a LOT to learn

Poker is a fun thing to do on a lazy Sunday night...not much more than that. Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays a good chunk of people will party, and during the week people have to study (oftentimes the case with Sunday, too).

At least among my circle of friends, poker games are MUCH more frequent during summer than during the year.

Isn't online poker illegal in the U.S.?

No, its illegal for the credit card companies to allow transactions with online poker websites, but it is not illegal to play it. Weird, I know haha. It is also illegal if you fail to claim it in your taxes. If his friend really pulls in 2000 a day (which i can tell you he's not) He'll be in jail soon

So how can you play without using your credit cards?

Debit card, e-checks, theres always ways around it. If you are a true player.. you should only make one deposit for your bankroll and never deposit again. It is actually quite easy to get money in though (gotta love the donators to the table :))

I thought about debit cards and e-checks, but here is what is stated: "The UIGEA does not actually ban online poker or internet gambling - instead, it makes it a crime for a bank or financial institution to knowingly fund an online gambling account"

So doesn't that make it illegal to use a debit card or an e-check?

Even so, I still wouldn't trust it. All of these casinos are offshore, so you are always risking losing all of your money.

insomniatic.. lol, until you are more educated on the subject it is best to just stay away :)

Do you understand the kind of money in online poker?

I don't know much about onlike poker, but I know of a friend who lost $3,000 because the offshore bank closed. There was no way he could get the money bank.

burgler, he makes about 2k a day.

So he makes $730,000 per year. Is that his job? Does he claim it on his taxes?

I started playing a lot online first semester, found some other poker playing guys, and we'd hit up a few cash games some times. I've played enough online to get a good estimate of win-rate (for a few different levels), and I think I've played a fair amount live (although the number of hands compared to online pales in comparison).

People are crazy if they think you can just make "60 to 200 dollars a session". That may be a winrate, but it's nothing like a constant salary. I've played totally correct (non-tilting) poker and have had times where I've dropped 8 or 9 full buy-ins. It's not that uncommon.
