Hi! Rising senior here. I’m very interested in politics and live near an early primary state, so I’ve recently gotten the opportunity to volunteer for a presidential campaign (making phone calls, etc). It was an incredible experience that was different from how I expected it to be and /very/ out of my comfort zone-- I’m not the most socially outgoing person, and am usually /terrified/ of phone conversations.
I think this could make a good essay topic, as it touches on overcoming fears and getting involved in something I care about-- I’m just worried that, if admissions committees do not support the candidate I volunteered for, it will hurt my chances. Do you think it’s too risky?
No. I think the value outweighs the risk. Maybe it’s possible to use it without going into detail about which campaign it was.
No, I don’t think the candidate matters unless it is a very polarizing figure. I realize that is a bit idiotic to say as many political figures are polarizing. But you catch my drift hopefully. Getting involved in the community is a huge plus.
As long as you didn’t volunteer to help out Donald Trump or something you should be fine… not that he’d need a grassroots campaign or anything…does he even take volunteers?
Anyways, yeah, I agree with what JustOneDad and BrownParent said. It’s what you do that matters. Essay readers aren’t supposed to demonstrate biased. I’m hopeful that they’re professional.
