Is Precalac Really Challenging?

As of now, i am already well advanced in math. This year, i took geometry and had no problem with any of the curriculum. Next year, i am supposed to take algebra II but i am considering testing through the class so i can take precalc instead. If i plan to take lots of ap classes throughout highschool, will i regret skipping an extra year of math?

If you think you can handle it, do it. I’m guessing you really enjoy math, so I would take the class.

Don’t get into the “Calculus Trap”, which means don’t try to “test out” of the class to just to “get ahead”, it’s always better to have a solid foundation rather than rushing to learn as much as possible.

I took Algebra II before Precalc. I’ve been doing okay, but I thought Algebra II was harder. Ironically, I got As in Alg. II but I’ve been getting Bs so far in Precalc. It’s a lot of trig first semester, and there’s been a lot of rational functions so far second. If you like math, you should be able to do it.

Pre-Calc was a breeze for me. Though I’m not entirely sure why, I think Pre-Calc and Calculus are completely different animals. I’ve had to work much harder this year in AP Calc AB, while other people I knew who struggled with Pre-Calc are now breezing through Calc.

I think it’s up to you. From talking to friends everyone has a different opinion on which math class is the hardest (between Alg II, Precalc, and Calc). It all depends on your own preference.

My recommendation would be not to skip Algebra II. I think you really need that base in solving some harder equations before moving on to precalc. There was a lot of stuff in precalc that I wouldn’t have been able to do in not for Alg II. You can talk to a teacher or two and ask their opinion. I’ve done that in making class selections and I think it’s the most helpful thing to just talk to someone who knows.

Do not skip math classes to get to a calculus level. Calculus is very easy, it is just the application of skills from all your pre-calculus classes that gets people. As long as you take Calc AB as a senior (or earlier) you will be fine. Only one AP class requires calculus other than the two calc classes…

I don’t think you should skip math classes unless you have some hidden math skill inside. I don’t know you so…

When I took Alg II my teacher was retiring so she just stopped teaching us. She was horrible. She was behind on calculator technology and didn’t know that you could find the x-int, max, min, etc on the calc. So I got an A- but didn’t learn anything.
Now I’m in Precalc and I just got an A+ this quarter. Im basically learning everything for the 1st time. Precalc = harder Alg II.

So I guess for it’s either take alg II and less future work, or jump to precalc and study.

I look Geometry last year, took Algebra II over the summer, and am in Pre-Calc Honors this year. Pre-Calc is a complete joke to me. A lot of first semester is just reinforcing what you learned in Algebra II, and trig is also rather easy. I decided to study Calculus AB on my own and that’s not so difficult either. If you think you’re good at math, then skipping should be fine (I am still puzzled about why some people think everyone needs a similar amount of time to have a “good foundation”). I sped through math in the last two years, going from Algebra IA to Pre-Calc Honors (or Calculus AB) in two years, and have no problem so far (in fact I was #1 in my Pre-Calc class last semester). If your school allows you to skip, take advantage of that opportunity.

I found Algebra II incredibly easy and much of a repeat as Algebra I. I say that you should self -study Algebra II or take a community college class over the summer and then pass out of the class. But don’t just skip it all together. You’ll need the info for pre-calc.
