Hi everyone

I'm new to the ACT and to college confidential. A friend told me that I should practice through previous ACT booklets. I took both tests ( my friend told me to take the test under ACT circumstance which i did) and I think i did ok on my scores. Are these accuracte. I was questioning the 2008/2009 one since it is an older version. Do ACT type questions change every year?

Ever since 1998 all the way to 2010, there have been only 3 different Preparing for the ACT booklets.

All of them are made by the ACT, so they are all authentic test questions. They test the SAME topics but with different questions.

well then i guess i can expect to get similar scores on the real ACT then. I also have a book list from my counselor and she told me that Barron’s was too extreme unless you were in the 30s. Since i seem to be right under the 30s will it be too hard for me

Barrons is a bit rough, but the thing is they want you to be prepared. If you are under the 30’s, you will still benefit from Barrons because every point counts. Just skim over Barrons and you will see some useful info

thanks for all the help. are there any other prep resources you suggest and any I should stay away from. i really want to do all I can to get my best score.

Use only real ACT test prep material and Princeton Review. I have almost every single ACT prep book and really, they are made for low scorers (as in, they are really basic and easy). if you want to increase your score, use the Real ACT Prep book, the online ACT course, and the ACT Preparation Booklet. Personally, my score went up like crazy by just learning concepts from a textbook. Like for Algebra, I just used an Algebra 2 test book and read lessons. It is important to be comfortable with everything or the time limits could kill you. And don’t think you can’t improve, because your composite can ALWAYS go up, no matter how low or high it is. I started at a 22 and finished at a 31, so keep your hope up!

thankx. I’ve heard good things about Princeton Review. I’ll definitely practice all i can until the last possible date. thankx again for all the advice

hmmm is it possible for your composite to jump up 8-9 points after 1 month of rigorous prep? I have had my score jump min. 4 points with in 2 ACT dates…but I need it to go up 6-9 points more…

what are your scores?

I went from an 18-22…and then from a 22-26.

I dont think you’ll be able to do it in a month but with what you called “rigorous prep”, you could definitely raise it over a period of time if you really study hard

well may i ask why wont I be able to?

an 8 point increase is very drastic. i haven’t heard of anyone reaching such goal with only a month’s worth of studying. thats not to say that you can’t increase 8 points or that it will take several months, i just dont think a month will do it. but I can’t see the future and I dont kno if you have any special ACT strategies so by all means go for it. there’s no such thing as useless studying

well thanks! :)
