<p>so my question is, is race a touchy/controversial/should not write-about topic?</p>

<p>i dont think so. i wrote my common app essay about accepting my ethnicity and virtually everyone that read it thinks i nailed it. just make sure you're writing it from the heart and not sounding like you're trying too hard and i think you're solid.</p>
