i'm applying to NU for ED, but if i don't make it, then i'm definitely applying to WashU. but is RD a lot harder than ED at WashU?
and especially if i didn't get accepted ED at northwestern, then does that mean i obviously have very low chance..?
If that's the case, i'll maybe consider doing ED at WashU instead
ahhhh... i dunno i'm confused.
oh, and consider that (although im prob. not applying for the art school --for minor probably) i have a pretty decent portfolio.
any comments?

The answer is "yes" to both of your questions, but that goes both ways (RD will be harder than ED at NW, and if you don't get ED into WUSTL, you probably will not have a great chance at NW RD).

You should apply ED to your true first choice (whichever it is) to give it the best shot.

I agree. If your family's finances permit, apply ED to NU or WashU, whichever you prefer. I speculate that these and similar schools will accept more ED students, who often require less financial aid and thus protect an institution's tuition revenue stream. You may think that the huge endowments at NU and WashU would make them unconcerned about shortfalls in tuition income. Not so. Endowment expenditures can't be increased much beyond a conservative outflow because the endowment must be managed to last in perpetuity. Another potential consideration is that RD may be a bit more of a crap shoot than usual because institutions might make greater use of the wait list to keep their yield high while balancing their financial aid obligations. This is why college admissions is an extremely complicated process. It would be irresponsible for institutions to ignore the financial consequences of their admissions decisions.

but what about the whole need-blind deal?

WashU admissions is not need blind. See:
