Is Religion a controversial topic for college app essay?

I am deciding to write about my religion with is Buddhism. I talked about when I was younger I didn't have a strong belief in my faith and thought it was stupid, until 2008 when my parents took me to there homeland of Vietnam and brought me to a Buddhist monastery and I learned about enlightenment. And how it open my eyes and taught me to be selfless and help others. After the trip and till this day I volunteer as much as I can such as my local homeless shelter, YMCA, and hospital.

It’s only controversial if you try to shove it down other people’s throats. Your essay topic sounds very good, however!

Because your essay describes how your religion has affected you as a person, it will be an effective topic. Like the above poster said, if you don’t use your essay to try and convert someone or denounce other religions, you should be fine.

Sounds like a great essay the way you describe it. At the end of the day, the essay has to be about you, not Buddhism. Sounds perfect.

I dont think it should be a problem, it just depends on how you write it

A lot of Christian students write essays about mission trips and how they changed their perspectives on life, so I would think this kind of topic is fairly common in admissions offices.
