i made post here:

oops... i made a post

Location:
split the country in half both ways, and I want a college in the top right area; city or suburb; cool neighborhood with awesome shops, restaurants, and cultural activities/places; many good events going on; many resources; good transportation system (and if not in the city, good transportation to a city!) Basically I don't want a place where the biggest nearby shops are those like Walmart

ALRIGHT, SOUNDS LIKE ROCHESTER IT PERFECT FOR YOU IN THIS ASPECT, ROCHESTER IS ITS OWN COMMUNITY, NOT IN THE CITY, BUT JUST A SHORT FREE BUSRIDE AWAW WITH PLENTY GOING ON

Campus:
GREEN!, I want many trees and flowers, old buildings, gothic architecture, many walkways and outdoor places to lounge; it could be rather compact and secluded. So kind of a country area within the city.

WELL WHEN I WENT TO VISIT IT WAS GREEN AS IT GETS, BUT REMEMBER, ITS PRACTICALLY IN CANADE, SO THE MAJORITY OF THE SCHOOL YEAR IS WINTER, BUT WHEN ITS GREEN, ITS GLOWING--AS FAR AS GOTHIC ARCHITECTURE, YEA I WANTED THAT TOO, BUT WHEN I WENT TO ROCHESTER TO VISIT--NOT SO MUCH--BUT THEY PULL IT IFF, THE CAMPUS IS STIL BEAUTIFUL AND CLASSY.

Socially:
Many events going on, and people wise:
I don't want a school where everyone is the same, but still, you could sum up the general student population as somewhat like this:
friendly, liberal (but not radical) democrats, want to take action to help global issues, people do not dress super brand name preppy, diverse student body (race and socioeconomic classes), people have fun just hanging out ( in other words not just partying), not a big Greek system or partying (though parties should still be around), not much alcohol/drug use, people are respectful, open-minded, academic, motivated, and not super-competitive. They should be unique and like to have fun.

THERES DEF ALOT OF SOCIAL STULL, THERES A GOOD SIZE FRAT LIFE, ~20% BUT NOT SO MUCH ITS OVERWHELMING AND ITS NOT A POTHEAD SCHOOL, ROCHESTER IS FILLED WITH REALLY SMART PEOPLE

Academics:
They should be very insightful! I want good history and English programs, and a music program with many resources. One can take language classes (particularly German), and music lessons easily. It should be easy to take electives, I would also prefer if one could design their own major or there is not a large core. Also, of course, good professors and classes.

ROCHESTER BRAGS THAT IS HAS NO REQUIRED COURSES--TAKE WHATEVER YOU WANT--eASTMAN IS ONE OF THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS AND REKNOWNED SCHOOLS IN THE COUNTRY, I KNOW SOME ONE WHOS GICING UP JULLIARD FOR EASTMAN, CLASSES ARE GREAT

Other Stuff
Good study abroad programs (particularly Germany), one can easily get involved, many clubs, good music groups that aren't reserved for music majors (like the school orchestra), practice rooms for music are easily available, good financial and merit aid, and of course the things everyone wants: good dorms, food, quality of life, and technology aspects

ALL OF THIS ROCHESTER HAS, IT REALLY IS A GOOD SCHOOL, TAKE ANOTHER LOOK AT IT, GO FOR A VISIT, THEY CONVERTED ME ON MY VISIT, ITS WORTH A CLOSER LOOK

HOPE I COULD HELP

JAKE09

thanks! rochester sounds cool

Umm, Jake ur on target with most of that info but i'd like to add on to some stuff..

Rochester's campus is Grecko-roman architecture, it pretty much pulls of that "old gothicy" feel, but then there are some buildings outside the quad I found were more modern, like the computer science department. If you are in the middle of the Academic quad and looked around, you'd think you were in the BC century haha ;) so beautiful..

Regarding social life - yeah thats exactly how you would describe Rochester. When I visited during the school year, i made sure to read the school newspapers and talk to as many different groups as possible, but as eclectic as the groups are, I couldnt help but sense a sort of Yellowjacket Community where everyone is on some common ground/vibe. It's hard to explain, if you visit during the school year you'll definitely see it...there is a lot to add, i can give you a better picture with other specific questions...feel free to email or IM me on AIM with all your questions, I did a lot of thorough research on the school when I was in ur place, i have a lot of info ready to share ;)

way to out do me..lol

musically they are one of the best schools in the country, and you can take lessons for FREE at eastman if you are a rochester student

woot woot!
