Is RPI Medal a big deal?

I'm thinking about going out of my way to meet the requirements by taking a summer physics class. Is it valued by Ivy league and other top schools (not RPI)

Bump

Your GPA and test scores mean more than an RPI medal. Obviously only school’s top students get them – but that should be plain through your transcript. While nice, it’s not much of any boost.

thanks

It is a big deal at RPI ($15,000 scholarship if you get admitted and enroll), not really at other schools.

I received the RPI medal. It probably was only a boost when it came to applying to RPI – they waived my application fee, I got accepted, and they ended up awarding me $15,000 a semester in merit aid I believe, which was nice. However, I really had no interest in RPI and probably shouldn’t have applied at all since I was never seriously considering attending.

I’m confused about what you’re saying in going out of your way to meet the requirements. I hadn’t taken physics at the time I received the medal. I’m assuming you’re a junior, in which case you should just take physics your senior year. Don’t bother taking it over the summer. You should probably take it your senior year regardless of the medal, especially if you are considering going to a top school or going into engineering.

I thought that physics was a requirement to recieve it:

I believe the award is made during the summer in which case taking physics over summer may not matter.

I’m sad we did not know about this. Tough being the practice child.
