Is SAT Tutoring Worth the Cost? (Fox Business)

One note of warning about Princeton Review’s online prep course: Technical glitches make it impossible to use, and then their refund policies make it impossible to recover your money. The only thing that comes of it all is sheer frustration for the student. Avoid Princeton Review online courses at all costs! It simply adds more stress.

It’s not worth it, UNLESS you are the laziest person ever and you are EXTREMELY addicted to texting, videos games, etc (But even then you can get off of those and learn how to prioritize…). It is always best to study yourself THE RIGHT WAY and control the different variables of how you study.

ClassOf2015HS is right, all prep classes (most of them anyway) really only provide discipline, and if you want to score high on the SAT, you should already have self-discipline.

Now I can answer the question.
2320 on the SAT, yes, the private tutoring definitely helped.

In my opinion, private tutors and self motivation is the way to go. Tutors help, but only to the extent of how receptive a student may be. For example, I got a 300 point raise on my SAT that I attribute mostly to my tutor. Of course I worked hard, but the tutor guided me every step along the way. Looking back, I don’t mind paying 2k for a 2300

@jhughley - you took the words right out of my mouth!

@jsawyer92 - the answer varies from about $15 (perhaps lower if online or in an area where the cost of living is very low) to $750, depending on the tutor.

Right now I’m a sophomore in high school and recently took a practice SAT test(not PSAT, more like a placement test) at a tutoring center nearby. This was the first SAT Test that I have ever taken and I didnt study for it at all. I got a 1080/1600. i got a 600/800 on the english and 480/800 on the math section. I just need advice on whether i should take SAT classes or buy a practice book to study on my own? Will the classes be worth the money, or will I be fine doing continuous self-practicing(starting now) ?? Thanks!

I agree with @jhughey , and I’ve been a full-time teacher (academic, SAT prep, AP English, foundational humanities) since 2002.
