Is Skidmore the right place?

Hey, I think i might want to go to Skidmore College. However, I have some questions first. Based on my profile, does Skidmore seem to be logical? I want to be in a place that really nurtures intellectual curiosity. I want a sort of off-beat, cool place where people are passionate. My fear is that Skidmore is simply not respected as being a good school. I get such mixed opinions on it. If one question can be answered from my post, it would be, is skidmore college a respectable choice? If other schools are recommended, the one drawback is that I very foolishly didnt take sat2s, so I can only apply to those who don't require it. Thanks for your help!

What's your rank?

I think Skidmore is a great place. My d isn't applying because they don't have her sport there but we visited a part of a 7 college trip in April, and we all liked the school. It was the least competitive (stat-wise) of the schools we visited, but that was not obvious -- we got a very good feeling about the intelligence of the students, the commitment of the faculty, etc. Definitely had a laid back and artsy feel to it, but not over the top. It sounds like the social life is fun, too. We liked Saratoga Springs, a nice college town, walkable from campus. The d of a friend of mine goes to Skidmore and loves it. She was a smart, slightly underachiving type in hs, but is feeling challenged and happy.

my school only ranks the top 10%, of whom the lowest had about a 96.5 average

You certainly seem to have the right reasons for wanting a place like Skidmore. It is a very open, friendly, passionate and challenging place, and certainly is respected as a good school, especially for creative types who want a well rounded liberal arts education. Kids there are smart with wide ranging interests, and love to have fun.

Have to ditto what NEwonk says. Skidmore is an excellent school for the right student and the OP appears to be just that. As for its reputation, it increases each year and is expanding beyond the upper Northeast (NY & New England), drawing kids for the Mid-Atlantic states and the Midwest. Also, with its athletic programs getting stronger, Skidmore is also attracting a more well-rounded student besides its base core of more artistically inclined students. Of similar former women's schools that have gone co-ed (Vassar & Connecticut College, e.g.), Skidmore among the more successful and popular. For the right student, Skidmore is a perfect fit.

Collegeparent is right on: Skidmore is currently a very hot college. It was getting quite competitive when I graduated five years ago, and seems to have accelerated in that direction over the past three years. The caliber of student applying to Skidmore is now quite high, and the College is truly capable of claiming its place at the table with its peer institutions: Bates, Hamilton, Vassar, Conn. College, etc.
