Ok, so I was just calculating how many classes I will have to take before I can transfer. Including all of the IGETC classes and my pre-reqs, I only have to take 10 classes. 10 classes didn't seem like very much for 2 years. Am I making a miscalculation?

I am a polisci major btw. so any polisci majors reading this, does that number sound normal?

Oh, also, how many classes would you reccomend taking in the summer?

Well, according to IGETC you need at least 2 English courses, 1 math course, 3 arts and humanities, 3 social and behavioral sciences, and 2 physical and biological courses. That is at least 11 courses plus some major courses you need to transfer, it sounds odd that you only need 10 courses. Did you take any AP exams during high school?

Yeah, unless you took and passed some AP exams it does seem like a little low. Are you following the pre reqs only for Berkeley?

Lucky poli sci major, I calculated that I have to take 20 classes to complete the Haas and UCLA Biz Econ pre reqs (17 if I pass my AP exams this year). ;)

Chickadee...I have to take 120 units to TRANSFER???? or to graduate??? Please tell me it's just to graduate, b/c I really don't want to spend the rest of my life at cc.

Yeah, right now I'm mainly concerned w/ the amount of classes needed to transfer. does 11 sound too low? How many did you take?

You need a minimum of 60 semester units to transfer. You'll take the other 60 at the the UC you want to transfer to.

Also, did you take two years of a foreign language in high school? IGETC requires foreign language, but if you completed two years or got a 500 or more on a College Board test, or took a FL class at your CC, you can get that out of the way.

lol, ok chickadee. you had me scared there for a second....

quietly confident, I took 4yrs of language in HS so I think I'm good there. So do I add units from those classes?

Ok, so if I've added up all of the classes I have to take, and I still don't have 60 units do I just take some other random UC approved courses to take up units?

I took exactly 60 units to transfer. I averaged about 12-16 units a semester and took 8 units in the summer (my online Spanish class was worth 5 units!) It was roughly about 19 classes but it depends on how many math, science and language classes you take that are worth more units.

To be clear about the language igetc requirement, taking 2+ years in high school means you don't have to take college foreign language classes for igetc but your high school classes don't count for units. Only AP scores can count toward units and those can only be applied in certain ways so make sure to talk to a counselor about that. Major prerequisites can fulfill igetc requirement so you can kill two birds with one stone. However you can't fulfill two igetc requirements with one class. The rest of your 60 units just come from filler courses that are UC transferable. I would reccommend maybe taking one or two Spanish classes because they're worth a lot of units. Just make sure your 60 unit total comes from UC-TRANSFERABLE classes. Any classes that aren't transferable don't count toward the 60 that you need.
