Hi! So I'm part of Tufts' Class of 2016 as an incoming freshman and I'm super excited.
I got my housing assignment and I am to be in South Hall, on the second floor. I know that South Hall is mixed (has upperclassmen) and I am wondering how a freshman will do in this type of dorm.
To any Tufts students or South Hallers, please tell me what you think! Would it be better if I moved to an all-freshman dorm instead?
Thank you!

D1 lived in South freshman year. Even though it is mixed class levels there are many, many freshman. She loved her hall, had a great time and made many friends. YMMV, but I suggest not worrying about it. Not sure you could move at this point anyway

Thank you very much for your response! I’m a bit relieved after reading it.
I’m both nervous and excited about dorming. I’ve heard that South Hall isn’t as social as some other dorms, which I am slightly concerned about.
Also, what about the treatment of freshmen by upperclassmen?

It’s fine, although about as down hill as you can get.
There is nothing wrong with being a freshman in a dorm that also has upperclassmen, and how it works out for a given individual in any given year is obviously a matter of who your neighbors (and roommate) happen to be, as well as one’s own personality.
Don’t worry about it. Also, as 1012mom says, you probably couldn’t change now anyway; if one could, that would cause chaos for the on-campus housing office.

Personally, I think it’s good for freshman to live in a dorm with upperclassmen. They can be a great resource. My son was in South Hall last year and the fourth floor doubles are awful - he couldn’t sit up in his bed without hitting his head on the ceiling. It doesn’t have as nice lounge areas as his freshman year dorm. My son never minded the walk and it has the advantage of being closer to Davis Square if you are going into Boston.

How did you get your dorm assignment? Did Tufts email you or you got it by mail? My son is traveling and won’t be back until august. He says he can’t get to his Tufts email from Europe for some reason.

Room assignments were sent by email.

The room assignments are also on the tuition bill.

Was it emailed on the Tufts email address? I just looked at the University bill on his ebill and can’t see any dorm assignments. Am I not looking in the right place?

It should say “Room Charge” and then the dorm and room number. My D is in Hodgdon so it says HODG and then her room #

Thanks. Just found it. It says SOUT 201. I’m assuming it’s South Hall 2nd floor?

Yep that’s South Hall, Second Floor, Room 201
Here’s a floor plan if you’re interested, and you can also find more info about South on the Tufts Residential Life site =)
