Ok, I hear diff. answers on this all the time. I checked off that I am Hispanic because both my Mom and Dad are from Spain. Spanish is spoken in my household, and I was taught 3 diff. dialects (Castilllian, Galician, and Basque) at a young age. We have a Hispanic culture by our language, meals, and music. I was accepted to Cornells Multicultural Visitation Program which is for URMs, and I was in the Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute. Both my Coll. Spanish teacher and my Guidance counselor say Spanish from Spain is legitimally Hispanic. What do you think?

Er, yes.

Hi*span*ic comes from the Latin "Hispania," which means "Spain" (technically, the Romans meant the whole Iberian Peninsula). Dictionary.com also offers "Spanish" as the first definition of "Hispanic":

Spaniards are the original Hispanics. =p

Thank you ! Finally someone who I agree with!

There is not set definition for Hispanic. There are many loopholes one could find to consider themselves "Hispanic". Luckily, I'm Mexican and don't have to find them.

I'd say if you identify with hispanic culture, yes, you're hispanic.

If you don't, and are digging up random records (which doesn't seem to be your case), then, don't check it.

Go for it!

Espa

I just wanted to say I didn't read the original post at first, only the thread title, but come on. Who asks such an obvious question? You think the thousands of white kids who select WHITE as their ethnicity are speaking Spanish at home, knowing 3 different dialects, being accepted to Ivy League multicultural program or in a Hispanic Youth Leadership thing? This is nothing but a brag sheet. If you ask someone if Spaniards or Argentinians are Hispanic, most Hispanics will jokingly say no, but of course the colleges consider it.
