Is St. John's College worth applying to?

I'm taking my ACT soon, along with trying to balance out 3 varsity sports and 5 AP clases, and don't quite know if I should devot the time and effort to applying to St. John's. They require an interview, essays (which is the most important thing), recs, and other things. Is St. John's worth applying to?

*BTW it's free to apply.

Annapolis MD or SantaFE NM.......which one are you considering?

Annapolis MD, I think of myself as more of a east coast kid compared with the west coast.

*There is also a 5-10page essay:p

The question is - would you consider going there if accepted? It is quite different from other colleges.

Their graduates have high success rates into graduate schools.....LAW, MEDICINE etc. The folks I know who have gone there have loved it.....the location and the programs.

I love the idea of reading the greatest works of literature in the world, it's just that I can't really see it helping me, esp for someone like me that wants to go to graduate school for economics.

"Requirements include a short set of reflective essays, two letters of recommendation, and transcripts of all academic work... SAT or ACT scores are optional, but they may prove helpful. Interviews and campus visits are strongly recommended."

1.)If I don't visit the campus will that hurt my chances?
2.)How do I schedule an interview?

I'm interested in either campus (but I prefer Annapolis to Santa Fe). My only concern is the smallness of the school. The funny thing is that I've been to the DC/Baltimore area 4 times already, and I always end up not having enough time to visit colleges in the area. The only campus I saw was GWU because it was right downtown.

A visit conveys sincere interest in the school and reaffirms why you think you're a good fit. In that sense, I think visiting (especially a school like St. John's with a unique environment) is important to the committee, but I don't know if not visiting could actually hurt your chances. As for the interview, I'm sure information is provided on the website.

St. Johns has a very unique and comprehensive visiting program that you really should take advantage of to see if you would like it there. The admissions office tells you the reading they are discussing in seminar and you are expected to come prepared! You attend seminar and math, science and language classes, and you can stay on Friday night to hear the weekly Friday night lecture. The St. Johns program is wonderful preparation for any type of grad school, but you really have to know what you're getting yourself into, and whether you'll like it. The admissions office is great--and Johnnies are very friendly and eager to tell you about the school. My daughter was accepted and loved the school, but ultimately decided that there were too many things she would miss by being there. She still considers it her all-time favorite admissions office and visit! Don't sweat the essays--they say they don't even have to be well-written, but simply convey your passion for learning. Go for it, but do try to visit!
