I know I could probably find an old thread, but is it even worth investing in such a program (0-6 year PharmD program)?

Someone help! Every time I tell someone about this school/program, they look at me is if I’m too smart for it. But I know it’s a very, very great program. Any outside thoughts?

Whimsical Kid, as the mom of a student currently in his 2nd year of SJU’s PharmD program, please be very sure you want to study pharmacy before you commit to a 0-6 program. It isn’t cheap. SJU is generous with their merit scholarships, but it’s everything else, such as dorming and mandatory meal plans, that add up. By third year (aka, the professional years), tuition increases and you’ll be paying grad school rates. I agreed to this school, because my son insisted he wanted to do 0-6 (no PCAT, no apps to pharm schools), and so far, the work hasn’t been difficult for him. It’s the administration he’s unhappy with, along with the realization that pharmacy may not be for him after all. He’d been on the fence about staying in the program for next semester, but when he didn’t get any of the blocks of classes he’d chosen, and the school basically threw together a haphazard random schedule for him, it was the deciding factor. More or less, he’s made up his mind to transfer out of SJU after this semester. He says the only thing he’ll really miss are the great group of friends he lives with, but it’s not enough to keep him there.

In all honesty, the school itself isn’t difficult to get into, but unless you’re in Law, PharmD or their PA program, it’s hard to justify the tuition. The amount of money I paid for a year and a half at St John’s would’ve paid for four years at a SUNY. Have you considered Northeastern and Rutgers? They have good PharmD programs. I regret not making my son apply to either one.

I’m actually applying to Northeastern, Rutgers, and St. John’s. St. John’s is the closest to where I live, and I will be able to commute. Like your son, I want to avoid the PCAT so I kinda don’t want to go to Rutgers since they require it. And, I’m also not sure. I feel like it’s too hard to choose what you want to do for the rest of your life at the age of 17…

My son had the same sentiment as you. He still has no idea what he wants to study, only what he doesn’t want to study. Because you’ll be commuting, it won’t cost you as much as it has cost us. And hopefully you’ll qualify for financial aid/work study and not just a merit scholarship. Much luck and success with your future plans!
