Is Stanford a good place to go for med school?

I’m interested in becoming a dermatologist, and I really want to go to Stanford. However, everyone keeps on talking about the business and engineering programs. I haven’t heard anyone talk about the medical program. Would it be a better idea to go to another school?

Stanford is one of the top med schools in the country. But with a lower than 3% admit rate, it may not be an option.

Any US medical school that you can get admitted to and can afford to pay back the debt of on a typical physician pay level (in a lower paid specialty, since getting a residency in a higher paid specialty is additionally competitive) is a good medical school.

Of course, getting admitted to any US medical school is extremely difficult. Most who apply do not get admitted to any.

Stanford is excellent for a LOT of subjects. Yes it is one of the very top universities for business and engineering and computer science and math. However, it is also one of the top universities in the world for medicine.

Admission is exceptionally difficult. Admissions at any medical school in the US is very difficult, and Stanford is significantly harder to get into than most.

“Any US medical school that you can get admitted to … is a good medical school.”

Exactly.

As someone who has gone to med school, short answer is yes. If you decide to continue on the path to medicine, you’ll soon realize how silly a question this was

@sushivocado Stanford is at the top or near the top across the board in all fields. It has a tippy top medical school and hospital system which provides great research opportunities and exposure to undergrads. Also it has grade inflation which helps with a lot when it comes to med school.

I echo the above poster’s statement that Stanford is very strong in all departments across the board; that is one reason why our kid decided to go there over an Honors College even at full pay. However, if finance is a problem, I would go to Honors College. For pre-meds, I noticed really smart kids going to colleges which pay them merit moneys, so they can save money for medical school.

Are you currently in high school or college? If you are still in high school you first need to get a bachelor’s degree. after getting a bachelor’s degree and a 4 year medical degree you would then do a residency in dermatology which would be at least 3 more years.

Yes, Stanford has one of the top medical schools in the country. Agree with the previous posters.

My only knowledge comes from what my kid has told me about his roommate who is a pre-med at Stanford. Says he studies a lot with fellow pre-meds, so it seems like pre-meds have to study a lot. Also says he might consider transferring down the road to another college which offers a guarantee to get into a medical school.

At any college.

On avg we actually studied a little less than most given 1) grade inflation of many (premed) classes, 2) name-brand recognition/“pedigree” which has a surprisingly large effect on # interview invites received, # acceptances early in the cycles, and # acceptances overall at med schools, 3) overall culture of healthy work life balance and attention to mental health and happiness at Stanford. But there’s no getting away from studying in this field, you’ll do it and take standardized tests until you either retire or die.
