i was thinking of taking french or italian but i was wondering if anyone has experience with the linguistics department at ucsd? i do not have any prior experience with either language.

i am a native spanish speaker and people have said that italian would be easier to learn but i know that french is more useful and widespread..

or should i just stick with completing the HILD2A/C to fulfill my ge reqs at muir?

i grew up with spanish and took french all throughout high school. spanish and french are surprisingly very similar.
idk how to answer your original question, as i’ve never started a language through ucsd but if you’d like to pursue either of those language it won’t be too much of a shocker.

there a lot of sounds that sound VERY similar and there are some tricky rules. i stopped like after the vowel part and said to myself “this shi* is hard, im going to stick with history” (it was around 3amish though)

Well any language you try to learn seems hard at first. I remember when I started Spanish in high school. I had no clue what was going on and I freaked. But after a little while it became more comfortable.

If I were you, I wouldnt just rule it out unless you’ve tried it. Remember that you have 2 weeks after classes start to drop and add courses.
