Hi I'm an incoming student majoring in Statistics.

How is stat major in UIUC? Is it difficult or competitive?
I've heard that Engineering or Computer Science major is very competitive, how about Statistics?

Probably not as challenging as CS or most engineering disciplines but still above average in difficulty.

It’s hit and miss. I’m a Math/Stats double major and my experience with Stats classes is that some of them are really easy while some of them can be really hard. A lot of it has to do with the professor. I took Stat 410 with Monrad and got an 82% which curved to an A.

I think you should definitely combine it with something. You could always do Statistics & Computer Science and get the best of both worlds.

I’m interested in a Math/Stats double major. How has your experience been? Has it been pretty difficult? How many credits have you been having to take a semester?

It’s been a pretty good experience. The difficulty depends on which classes to choose. If you want the best education, stick closest to the “Graduate Prep” concentration.

Both majors start off pretty much the same. The Stat & Prob sequence and the Calc sequence are pretty much focused on computation. Then everything changes and you need to be able to prove things really well (Math 347, 416, 417, 447, etc. Stat 424, 429, etc.) As you move into more abstract classes, things get more difficult.

I’ve been here 4 semesters and credit hour wise I’ve done 15, 18, 15, 22 (and 16 for Fall 2011). However I came in with Calculus 3 already done and like 40+ hours of AP credit. I’m also getting an 18 credit hour minor.
