Hello everyone.

I'm a deferred student from Wharton. So naturally, I applied to Stern, UChicago, Cornell, etc..

Since Wharton accepts <10% of its deferred applicants for the RD round, I've basically given up hope and put NYU Stern as my 2nd choice for a business school. (Besides Ivies. If I get into some Ivies, I'll probably go there.)

So here's my question for you guys!

Since many students seem to be jobless at Stern (or NYU, not sure which is more correct), how do business students manage to get interns & job experience?

I was just wondering because for the day or two I've spent on the NYU forum, many people seem to be talking about how the students are semi-spoiled (parents picking up the tab), not having jobs, etc..

Shouldn't NYU students be the ones with jobs & interns since they're literally raining from the sky? I mean seriously!

So yeah. How DO Stern students get interns & job experience?

From my experiences, it seems like EVERY Stern kid has had one, if not multiple, internships. Since we’re in such a great location, companies recruit for part-time internships during the school year and FT positions over the summer.

We have a great career services website where companies post available positions, and where you can submit your resume. I’ve found it to be very helpful since I’ve been here. But besides that, there are also plenty of networking opportunities. I-banks host presentations and networking events every week, and I’ve also found these to be extremely useful.

Thank you for your response! I just wanted some sort of confirmation from a past/current Stern student. That’s relieving.

“Since many students seem to be jobless at Stern (or NYU, not sure which is more correct), how do business students manage to get interns & job experience?”

I don’t know where you heard that from. Stern places 95% of it’s graduating class into the work force within 3 months of graduation.

On top of that, finding internships and jobs in the city is pretty easy. All you do is submit your resume to any job/internship you find on the career services website and sooner or later a potential employer will contact you.

And if you’re that worried about getting jobs/internships, rush a business fraternity. They take care you you VERY WELL.

I’m actually not even a Stern student lol (CAS Econ), but I’ve still been able to land two internships so far (one as a sophomore, one as a junior): a summer internship with a brokerage house, and a PT internship this upcoming spring with a hedge fund. Just goes to show you the opportunities available even for a non-Sternie like myself, so as long as you know how to market yourself, you’ll be fine.
