Is Stern the best option for an undergraduate going into business, except the ivies?

Is NYU STERN the best place to go for an undergraduate business education besides UPENN Wharton/other ivy league schools?

There's plenty of good options. Michigan, Berkeley, MIT, Notre Dame, Emory, USC, etc. NYU-Stern is among the best, yes, but it's hard to point to one as the definitive #1.

Berkeley. Its half the cost.

You can't apply as a freshman, you must apply after being admitted to the school. It's also extremely competitive OOS.

what about the internship opportunities of NYC?

Here is Business Week's rankings on Undergraduate Business Schools:

Undergraduate Business Programs - BusinessWeek

UVA is number 2 undergrad business school right behind wharton

Stern gets recruiters from those places, too. Overall, I think Stern, Ross, Mich, UVA... are all on the same level.

NYU Stern is great for finance--and about 70% of the people that go to Stern major in finance at the undergraduate level.

If you rank strictly by finance majors only, Stern ranks #2 at the undergraduate level (on USNW). If you go strictly by placement within NY, they would rank #1 for undergraduate finance majors--but, of course, that's because of their location and the fact that many Wharton graduates and UVA graduates go to other East Coast metropolitan areas and to other areas across the country and around the world.

ivyleaguer7890, NYU stern, UVA, Wharton, Michigan, Georgetown, UC Berkeley and MIT all get recruiters from all those employers--as do the the Ivies.

is that list accurate?? Stern > MIT?

lol @ acting like only Ross students get recruited by GS, etc. That happens at any top school, even small LACs like Williams get a lot of courtship from top firms, even though they don't have undergrad B schools.

Narcissa,

That was 2006 and 2007's finance ranking by USNW for undergraduate schools. Since I don't buy the magazine every year, I can't vouch for it being the same in 2008--but I would expect that it hasn't changed.

Anyone want to confirm this year's results for finance schools from USNW (or are they even out yet?)

Stern, Haas, McIntire, Mendoza are all great program options to NYU Stern's School of Business. But from what I have heard, Stern is top notch in Finance. Only Wharton has a strong finance program than Stern. Of course, Harvard probably can surpass Wharton in overall variety of business job placement because it doesn't focus specifically on a chosen field.

Stern is a top-notch in finance: probably almost on par with Wharton. In other areas like marketing, management, etc., it is sub-par with other top b-schools such as Ross, Haas, etc.

If you just look at the sheer number of recruitments to I-banks from Stern, it exceeds most other schools in U.S., including many ivies.

Harvard, Wharton, Princeton, and Stanford stands above all others,

and Stern is in the next tier with Yale, Dartmouth, Duke, etc. (I'm just talking about job prospective for financial industries upon graduation)

I have USNWR' August 27, 2007 magazine copy.
For Finance:
Wharton
Stern
Haas
Michigan
MIT

If you want to do finance, then Stern is the best option outside of the ivies. even with the ivies in consideration, it's still a good option. there are a decent amount of kids that got into the "lower" ivies that chose to come to Stern because of its location in New York and their preference for finance over econ. there are even some, believe it or not, that chose not to go to HYPSWM, but these understandably are in the minority.

if you don't want to do finance, you might not be getting the best education. but know that Stern is trying to change the fact that 75% of kids major in finance to improve its rankings. and you could always double major.
