are they classes that you take per quarter, i.e., 1a for a quarter, b for the next, then c, for the latter quarter? or is it just one course in all that you can take in one quarter, but counts as 3 courses for a ge requirement?
i just realized that i have to take 3 courses for arts and humanities requirement
omg! i have so many ge classes to take in so very little time. that means i'll have to take summer classes -_-

are you referring to the visual culture series? it used to be a sequence (a = fall, etc.) but they just changed it this year. you can take all 3 parts in one quarter if you want to. if you aren’t in the major it might be difficult to get a spot in the classes though (next quarter), since they are small and restricted to majors until whenever those restrictions are removed.

also, look for classes that can overlap GE categories! (ex: art history counts for two categories)

i wasn’t really sure if it was the visual culture series… i heard studio art was a pretty easy class haha
well i was looking at the catalogue.
i didn’t see anything about art history overlapping other ge categories. where did you find that out? i want to take classes that take off other ge reqs as much as possible.

the visual culture series is sort of like the intro to the studio art major which is probably why people say it’s easy. in reality, the difficulty varies by teacher and they are always rotating (probably without pattern), so the teacher you get depends on luck.

you know if a class will overlap categories if the description looks like this:

40B Medieval and Renaissance (4) W. Focuses on the art of the Mediterranean area and Europe between ca. A.D. 350 and 1600. By means of movements and artists, examines the cultural identities of the Christian, Islamic, and early modern worlds. b** <-------

those are the two categories that this art history class will count towards.

there are some classes that could be used for a few categories but can only be applied to one, such as:

10 Introduction to Phonology (4). Basic concepts in phonetic description and phonological analysis. Prerequisite: Linguistics 3. b**

wait where did you find those?
in the schedule of classes/web reg?

you can find those course descriptions in the catalog:
[2009-10 General Catalogue Table of Contents](<a href=“UCI General Catalogue Archives”>UCI General Catalogue Archives)

but through the online schedule of classes, you can also filter by GE category and so you can see what classes would actually count towards GEs, instead of electives

at orientation were you given any kind of pamphlet/brochure thing listing the GE categories and which classes counted towards GEs? i got one that was yellow, and it had an asterisk and some other symbol by classes that could be counted toward 2 categories

ohh ok
yup i did get one , i guess i never looked through it lol
THANK YOU!
