Is SUNY ESF a good school? Also, if you've been there did you like it?

I'm really interested in environmental/ecology things but I most likely want to be a medical doctor. SUNY ESF's chemistry major (do you even call it a major?) seems REALLY interesting since chem is my best subject, but it combines some bio and environmental stuff with it which sounds AWESOME. Unfortunately, I can't really find any info other than on the website which is obviously skewed a little. Does the school give you a good education? Are there any research opportunities in the lab (not fieldwork)? Seeing as I'd like the option while fieldwork sounds interesting. On **************.com people have said the coursework is challenging, but I feel I am overqualified for the school. (SAT - 2070, Top 10/350 in a competitive school, REALLY involved in research and have gone pretty far w/it, etc.) However, the tuition is REALLY cheap and I think the environmental stuff will give me an edge compared to the "typical" med school applicant. At first I was considering Ivies, but my SAT score is low. Sorry I'm rambling... SUMMARY: ESF will probably be a safety but I'm considering it a bit more highly than most safeties because of the low cost. Would it be worth it for an almost-ivy caliber student?

I don’t know much about ESF but I do have a friend who chose it because she is also very interested in the environment and she really likes it there. It’s on the campus of Syracuse University and the ESF students stay in the dorms and eat in the dining halls there, etc. That’s all I know but I figured I would share haha : ) good luck!

Yes, it is a great school. I could go on and on for days.

hopefullybrown15, another option is to attend SUNY ESF for the first 2 years and then attend SUNY Upstate Medical University for the final 2 years of a bachelors program. Then you could major in something like Medical Biotechnology. See:

You must apply to both schools out of high school for the program. The two schools are about a block apart, adjacent to the SU campus.

I think ESF has its own track for its students applying to Med school as well.

I believe ESF forces you to specify a major when you apply. And you may pick 1 alternate major when you apply.

ESF seems to be limiting the number of courses their students can take at SU. For example, they will not cover the costs of taking a foreign language at SU unless you have some compelling reason and get special approval.

If you really want to be involved in research, why not look at one of the universities? I think ESF is a great school, personally, but you might get a better research experience at Stony Brook or UB and their course offerings are also larger.

Just so you know, SUNY ESF is heavily involved with research. Because it has programs up through doctoral, all of the research there is PhD level research.

How much opportunity is there for undergrads to do research, if you know?

When we did our tour this summer the student tour guide said that even freshman are involved in research. She said the professors regularly send out emails to those who are interested. In fact she said students often set up a direct to trash rule because they get so many emails asking if they are interested in being a research assistant.
