Hey guys, I am contemplating visiting Swarthmore and a few other schools in the area in June. I wanted to get a few opinions on a couple of issues such as is Swarthmore a school where a visit makes a big impression? Positive or negative? I am fairly socially conservative to moderate, but I certainly enjoy discussing why I have the beliefs on specific issues that I do. If someone could post a link or share their opinion on conservatives/moderates fitting into the liberal culture of Swarthmore that would be awesome. Thanks in advance for your time!

I won’t comment on the conservative thing, as I’m simply an alum (and parent of a soon-to-be freshman). But it is hard to imagine a campus that would not make as good impression aesthetically as Swarthmore. It is an absolutely gorgeous campus. The tours I’ve gone on with both my kids also gave a very good impression. Swat has gotten some poor press lately as far as being PC (but it is hardly the only one these days). The Quaker foundation certainly has the intention to encourage respectful debate.

Based on the post, you’d be fine. Sure the fanatical left will be out in force occasionally (on any campus really), but the vast majority is more interested in the learning than the protests and politics. It’s one of the friendliest campuses I’ve visited, and the kids seem engaged and happy (even with the crazy workloads). If nothing else, you can answer your own questions and include or ignore the school when application time comes. If you can fit it in, it’s worth the trip.

Just understand that the campus will be empty of students, so that does make a difference to many people. It’s a gorgeous campus, whether it’s empty or full.

Thank you for the responses. They were all helpful and I appreciate them!

I agree with EyeVeee that “the vast majority is more interested in the learning than the protests and politics.” The following story is about the Quaker institution just up the road, but it may provide insight into the climate at Swarthmore. William Bowen spoke at Haverford’s commencement about Robert Birgeneau’s decision not to accept an honorary degree. (Some Haverford students opposed Birgeneau because of his handling of the Occupy Movement at Berkeley.) Bowen referred to the students who protested Birgeneau’s selection as “immature” and “arrogant.” (He also criticized Birgeneau for cancelling.) Bowen’s speech apparently received a standing ovation.
