My guidance counselor tells me I can get in, but most people make it seem like it's pretty competitive...

I have a 28 ACT score and an 87.5 unweighted GPA

what are their averages?

relatively...easy..

I think you could get in with that. Depends on what you're applying for.

Newhouse is very difficult to get into.

i had the same act score and a better gpa and got into newhouse.. i think they take lots of consideration into your essays and extracurriculars..

anyone know what the acceptence rate is for the architecture school?

is that true about Newhouse being "very difficult to get into"? does anyone know their acceptance rate?

Last year Newhouse accepted 20% of their early decision applicants and 5% of their regular decision applicants. The average gpa was 3.98, and the average SAT score was 1300. That is what we were told during the accepted student days.

Please tell me that the 3.98 was weighted....They told us similar stats also, but couldn't get an answer about the GPA......What we had heard was that they accepted 330 freshman; based on your stats, that would mean that they would have had to have at least 5-10,000 applicants to achieve their yield numbers...I don't think they have 100% yield......IMO, that 5% sounds very low, even for Newhouse.......

I'm only quoting what we were told, but there were 800 actual students accepted with the hope that only 320ish students would attend. Afterall, Syracuse is not the cheapest school on the planet! They said they had accepted such a large number or early decision students that if you were one of the few lucky regular decision students accepted that you must have had an amazing record! My own daughter had that awesome GPA, but her SAT's were not that amazing, only 1230... but I think what got her in was she showed a true passion for her major (graphic arts) as she took the class for 3 years, 2 as an independant study, and also added 2 photo classes, she did the layout and design for the school's newsletters, etc... showing she really had interest in what she was applying for. So although she was not a standout from her test scores, she stood out as someone with a genuine interest in graphic arts.

I think that is something they look for to get into Newhouse, in addition to having a good high school transcript.

When I visited over the summer, Dean Rubin said that Newhouse accepted about 25% of their applicants for both early and regular decision. Five percent seems awfully low...

25% seems more like it.....3200 applicants, 800 acceptances, 320 enroll....Thanks, Corduroy, for clearing that up.......

According to Kiplinger, Syracuse University's admission rate is 65%

Zee: that's definitely not for Newhouse or Architecture.......It actually even sounds a little high for arts & science, but who knows.....

I'm a freshman in Newhouse, and last year, I was told that 10% of RD applicants were accepted into Newhouse. Twenty-five percent was the combined acceptance rate for ED and RD.

According to collegeboard.com, Syracuse's overall admission rate for last year was 51%; that's down from what I think was 58% the year before that.

What about if you are deferred from ED to RD pool? This happened to my DD. Not sure how this affects here chances. After all they didn't reject her. Her record is very good, but her first quarter grades weren't so hot. She brought them up second quarter though.

is syracuse arch hard to get into?

Yes, the Architecture school is very competitive. I applied this year and still haven't heard my decision. It has been ranked #3 by design intelligence, so they are really looking for high-quality students.

Zee: the Kiplinger link you provided says that SU's admission rate is 51%, which is consistent with the U.S. News & World Report figure.

Do anyone know the admission rate for the School of Management by chance?

By the way, Newhouse isn't the only school that has tough admission standards. Geting into most programs at the School of Visual and Performing Arts is also very difficult.

VPA/Whitman/Newhouse/Architecture are all fairly hard to get into.
But I wouldn't say that just high scores would get you into the school. From my own personal experiences (and from meeting other students who are currently at SU) I would definitely say that other activities, whether it'd be leadership. volunteer, or any other ECs, they will contribute significantly to your admissions.
