Hello. I have been accepted and will attend UVA in the Engineering program next year. I believe students can only declare their major at the end of their first year? I want to do System's Engineering. Is it hard for student to be accepted into the program? Approximately how many students apply and how many get into the Systems Engineering program? What about the other engineering majors? What happens if you don't get into anything, do you have to spend another year in general engineering before you can apply again? Thanks in advance!

a) system’s isn’t hard to get into
b) only BmE and Systems are officially capped, so other majors you pretty much just “sign up” for and take the classes
c) you have to start taking classes down a certain path after first year, there aren’t really any “general” engineering classes

So i’ll have a pretty good chance on continuing with Systems? I don’t want to waste a year if im not accepted.

From what I understand, it’s not terribly hard to get into. Why would it be wasting your time if you didn’t get in? Are you dead-set on majoring in systems engineering?

Shoe probably knows this better than I do since she has been a E-guide, but I have heard that no one has been turned down who has applied, unless that person should have been switching majors anyway.

cavalier: It’s just that I really want to major in Systems, and would not enjoy the situation as much if I had to settle for some other engineering major. Also, I wanted a Engineering in Business Minor and the Systems major is the most unrestrictive, which makes it easier to pursue my minor.

MechWahoo: No one has been turned down? Thats great news for me thanks!

Don’t take my word as gospel. Go to Sys’ website at [University of Virginia: Department of Systems and Information Engineering](http://www.sys.virginia.edu/people/staff.html) and check with the undergraduate coordinator. He/she can tell you the real story.

Thank you MechWahoo.

Mech is 99% right, but I don’t want to say 100% just for the slim chance one kid had a 1.8 first semester and got rejected. I’ve never heard of anyone being rejected, especially after first year. When I considered switching mid second-year, they just asked me to fill out the application for kicks. They’re trying to expand the systems program anyways, and they’re building a six-story building to accomplish this. Long story short, don’t be worried about the cap. If you want to do UVA’s sysE program, send in your check.
Also, even if for some weird reason you don’t get accepted, I know people who switched into it after second year and are doing just fine, and have a minor.
