Is taking 4 years of a language that important?

I've already taken 3 years of Japanese. I'm considering not taking Japanese IV and instead taking another AP course, is this a good idea? I thought four years were "required" but apparently not...?

continuity of sequential courses look good. That is why people encourage it a lot. if you just quit at this point, colleges may think that you are not persistent or that you thought Japanese was hard. However, if you are a native Japanese, you might want to consider dropping Japanese and taking another useful AP course.

I got into Harvard, UChicago, Berkeley, UCLA, Uhi of Michigan, and UCSD without for years of a language. I took three years of French, got B's in it and hated it. So this year I took AP Chem instead. I turned out ok.
