I’m currently a sophomore forecasting classes for my junior year of high school.
I was wondering if doing 5 AP classes would be too much ? Suggestions and comments about some of these AP classes are much needed. Thanks
Here is some more information about me :
If I take 5 APs next year ( as a junior) here’s what my schedule would look like…
AP Calculus AB
AP Chemistry
AP Computer Science A
AP United States History
AP English Language
Spanish 3
Past/Current AP classes :
AP Human Geography
AP World History
AP Biology
AP Psychology
Extracurricular Activities :
International Human Rights Club
National Honors Society ( will join Junior year )
Intern at a Lab
IMO you don’t need that many as you will be studying for ACT/SAT’s and want to spend time on EC’s, sport, a job, etc. Have you done well in current/past AP courses? If so you already know what it takes. At our high school the very top students (maybe 5 kids) taking that many. Most students take 2-3 junior year. It could be different at your high school. AP Chem and AP Calc will be a lot of work, easier if you are strong in math. APUSH and AP Lang will also be time consuming. Good teachers can make all more manageable. Good luck in your decision!
I’ve been taking AP English AP calc AB and APUSH this year as well as AP Psych first semester and it’s a lot but if you work at it can be manageable. Maybe take AP Chem senior year? That would make it much more manageable.
AP Chemistry and APUSH are both killers. If you have plenty of free time to dedicate yourself to those classes, then go for it. But you should know that AP Chem and APUSH are very difficult and time consuming.
I did it and junior year were my best grades yet. Albeit, I did take different classes (Bio, APUSH, Spanish Lang, Psychology, English Lit) but I’ve always had a heavy workload so I didn’t really notice much of a difference
How hard are you working to get good grades in your current classes?
How are your time management skills?
How do you handle stress?
My D took 5 AP classes (Lang, USH, Chem, CalcBC, and HumanGeo I believe) junior year and got straight A’s while also an officer in a couple of clubs, and performing in the school musical. It can be done, but it took phenomenal time management skills and some serious determination. She missed some sleep at times.
My sophomore S is struggling with only one AP class this semester (honors otherwise) and a similar or more heavy EC load. He’s not enjoying it at all. I don’t think that 5 AP academic schedule would be survivable for him, and he’s a very smart kid–he just doesn’t manage his time at that level.
AP Calculus AB- from what i’ve heard, this class is VERY hard, most say it’s the hardest offered at my school
AP Chemistry- Another very hard AP
AP Computer Science A- i’ve heard that if you have prior experience it’s not hard
AP United States History- Not hard exactly, but a lot of work. Lots of reading
AP English Language- Lots of reading and writing, but not very hard
I would ask around and see if anyone you know has taken these. AP courses can vary by difficulty according to the school.
On average I’m getting 7 hours of sleep. My school makes juniors take chemistry or AP Chem and its the only year we can do chemistry. Plans for senior year is most likely all aps or 5 aps
No, I’m implying it’s a lot of work and likely an overload for that year.
A ‘fun’ class is a class that’s easier and allows you to focus differently, what it is depends on the student, Current Events, Choir, Weight Lifting, Culinary Arts, Creative Writing…
You’re better off getting straight A 's in five rigorous classes and having plenty of time to invest in one or two ec’s. More satisfying, more efficient in terms of college admissions.
CS A would be good senior year along with 3more AP 's (4 if they’re not all hardcore.)
