I'm not sure yet whether I want to major in English or not when I get to college. Right now, I'm a sophomore in high school trying to decide whether I want to take AP English next year. Also, if I didn't take the AP class and then later on decided to major in English, would that look bad? How important are AP classes to colleges?

AP English will help you become a better communicator and a more articulate and skilled writer, no matter what your future major. Even engineers need that skill set.

Agreed. Taking AP English as a junior will really help with your ability to write strong essays for college apps.

In addition to what everyone said about it strengthening your writing skills, a lot of colleges have a humanities/writing gen ed that can often be fulfilled with AP English. But no, you won’t be rejected if you apply as an English major because you haven’t taken it.
